We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Evan Zwerneman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Evan , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My Dad is my hero. My Dad started and currently owns/operates a construction company in Houston, TX. Growing up my Dad taught me the value of a dollar and taught me that I had to work if I wanted to buy anything in life. He told me from the beginning of my business, “Evan, have a stopping point in your growth”. At the time, I kind of brushed it off and thought, “why would I turn down business?”. Now years into running my own business I am realizing what he meant by that. You have to be comfortable with what you have at some point in your career. Quality is way more important than quantity in the service industry and growing organically and having control is so important to a successful and sustainable business. My Dad taught me that and I am forever thankful for is guidance and being there every step of the way.

Evan , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Evan Zwerneman. I own EZ Dog Stay and Play LLC where we have 5 Dog Buses and pick up and drop off dogs all over the Austin, TX and surrounding areas. We offer daycare and overnight boarding with options for baths, froyo treats, nature walks, etc. We solve the problem of pet parents feeling guilty for their dogs not getting out of the house and socializing enough. The client goes to work as usual and while they’re gone we pick up their dog, take them to our dog ranch and play all day and then drop them back off at home without ever inconveniencing the client. The client gets home to a nice tired and socialized pup and gets to enjoy their evening! We LOVE what we do and get so much joy hearing our clients rave how convenient it is. We truly care about our clientele and the dogs well-being and it shows with our level of care we provide to each one.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My background was managing a Veterinarian Clinic for years before launching my business. During my time as a Vet Tech I decided to start dog sitting clients dogs on the side for extra money out of my house. Within a year I had more clientele then I knew what to do with and decided I was over working for a corporate company when I was making more money working for myself. I’ve always knew I wanted to own my own business I just did not realize at the time this would turn into my full time career.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Going above and beyond for each client! If they have a UPS package on their front door you better believe we’re going to set it inside safely for them when dropping off their dogs. We go that extra mile for clients and it pays off in the end! I always say do the right thing and the rest will follow. It’s not hard to put yourself in others shoes and understand what you would want in a service. That little extra time spent on things goes a long way! Good news spreads fast too.
