Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Evan Saffer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Evan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Everyone wants to be loved, period. How would we know that feeling if everyone loved us? To some degree you have to accept, especially as an artist, that some may not get what you’re doing. Most people are carrying their own burden, or fear inside them and that is the basis of hate. They feel justified in putting you down so they can come up. I believe all ships rise with the tide. I believe that competing and making enemies only damages you and your own brand. Makes My Blood Dance is touring nationally, helping hundreds of bands a year network and play awesome shows, working with support acts and bringing crowds together for fun and music, period. Don’t give attention to the haters, move towards the light, towards love, towards faith and find your people. That is the journey worth taking. I am grateful for all that we have worked with, including the ones that have chosen to disparage us, for making us stronger and tighter with those that choose love. Keep rockin’
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m the frontman, songwriter and bus driver for Makes My Blood Dance. We are a disco metal band out of New York, touring nationally and recording with amazing and creative people. We do about 3-4 national tours per year in the US and keep expanding our network. Jon Kristian and I run all the tours and along with members of our team at Alpha Centauri Records, we network with thousands of bands nationwide and bring people together for some insanely fun live events. Right now MMBD is in Los Angeles recording new music with producer Mikal Blue (OneRepublic, Macy Gray) who has become a good friend and is an inspiration to work with. Yesterday Brett Mazur (CrazyTown) popped in to help on the production side while we were tracking drums; we got some dramatic results and it was pretty amazing with all those creatives in one room. Right now I’m living the dream, making music that I love with a force that is beyond my reckoning, alongside my band who I love. For these singles we have Filia Luna on the bass and Alan Zaparoli on drums. When we hit the road for the Heaven Collides Tour our boy Crow Starbird will be taking over on the drums. www.makesmyblooddance.com

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The only thing that can support artists is confidence to keep going. Then they find their greatness, they allow themselves to be who they dream they can be. We all question if we’re good enough. Hear me now: “you are good enough, you’re loved, keep going”. Everyone is critical, has an opinion, competes and compares. We all want to be loved and encouraged, and that comes in short supply. It’s not about money, although money is energy and should not be demonized. It’s not about followers and likes either. It’s about being genuine, encouraging, loving and free. It’s about bringing people together because alone we die, and together we flourish and become strong.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That one day I would make it and then be happy. Be happy now, enjoy the process and where you are. Anyone ahead of you has earned their place, the world owes you nothing. Check your ego, get to work, and enjoy your work. Be conscious of how you carry yourself, how you speak to yourself and others, and make it a reality that uplifts and inspires. That is who I am, although I’m a human being, I’m not perfect. It’s progress not perfection, it’s drawing boundaries and having self confidence and self respect. Be you. Be free.
