Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Evan Rudman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Evan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always had a deep personal connection with music. However to me, listening wasn’t enough. I needed to actually become a part of the music. I wanted to engage in the process to create a beautiful work of art. So, I put in the work everyday to teach myself the basics of drumming. My dedication and consistency helped carry me to the position I’m in today. Looking back I wish I took lessons at first to learn the proper fundamentals. However it is more impressive to say I’m self taught. The only obstacle you will ever face in your pursuit of a goal is yourself. You have to tell yourself that you can overcome any barrier as long as you put in the work
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a drummer. I post drum covers about everyday other day. I started making videos online as soon as I picked up the drums. I wanted to show people that everyone starts somewhere. So many people online only show their very best and it can be intimidating to many musicians. I wanted my followers to come along my journey with me. Now they can see how far I’ve progressed as a person and a musician. I think that’s what sets me apart from others. I also push myself to post consistently and to learn each song as closely to its original. I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made and the attention I’ve received from my online career. A lot of the bands I’ve played in stemmed from my online content. I’m also been able to meet alot of musicians at my college because of it. My covers have even gotten the attention of the writers of the songs. Many famous musicians have liked, commented and reposted my videos. People such as Stephen Pearcy (Ratt), Jonathan Moffett (Michael Jackson’s drummer), Tris Imboden (Kenny Loggins), Hall & Oates, and many more. To see my icons and role models approve of the work I do is the greatest feeling ever.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want people to know they are capable of anything. So many musicians shelter their talent and don’t show it to the world. I want people to see that it’s not that big of deal to share your talents. I’ve also had many people who used to play drums tell me how I caused them to pick it back up again. My goal is to inspire as many people as possible to learn an instrument, while also showcasing amazing music they may have forgotten or never heard before.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The key to social media is short form videos and consistency. I was able to gain an audience by posting a video everyday. Many content creators have inconsistent upload schedules which causes people to lose interest. Reels and tiktok videos are the key to gaining followers. Usually the shorter the video, the more attraction it will gain. It is also important to exemplify energy that is almost contagious to the viewer. You want to draw them in and make them feel engaged with you.
