Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Evan Leed. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Evan, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The defining moment of my professional career was learning about attachment theory. I’ve always felt different than everyone else around me. In my teen years this manifested as starting a decades-long quest to figure out how I and everyone else worked so that I could feel “normal.” I began to read everything I could find on psychology, self-help, self-development, philosophy, religion, spirituality, etc. In early adulthood I began to try out every kind of talk therapy, alternative therapy, meditation, and spiritual work I came across. Some things landed and produced great changes but nothing moved the needle on that underlying sense of being different. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 30s that I learned my experience had a name – preoccupied attachment – and there were a handful of new therapeutic modalities that could work with this and change it permanently. Within short time I felt greater satisfaction in my relationships and personal pursuits than I ever had and then was inspired to help other people do the same. I began to teach classes on attachment and work with clients one-on-one.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an attachment coach and educator. I got into this field after a long struggle with depression, anxiety, and a general feeling that I was not as capable of functioning in the world as those around me. I found attachment theory and a new therapeutic modality called the Ideal Parent Figure protocol, which uses the imagination to shift the way we automatically respond to situations in the real world, and within a few years was cured of my depression and thriving in ways I previously though impossible. Currently I teach on attachment and self development, am working with a new app called Eden, and work one-on-one with patients facilitating the Ideal Parent Figure protocol. My clients come from all walks of life. Some are beset by trauma, loss, and adverse situations, while many are looking for greater fulfillment in their relationships, work, and creative pursuits. What sets me apart is that I walk the walk – I have come from a background of considerable adversity so I understand first-hand where my clients are coming from and use my experience to help them change their lives in the same way I changed mine. I’m always teaching classes and looking for new clients. I’m also excited about my work with Eden, a new app that employs a mix of education, guided meditations, journaling, and other techniques to help its users regulate emotionally and fix their attachment wounds.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Through my late 20s and most of my 30s I worked as a translator. Work was easy as I had a few agencies that would send me several potential jobs a day and I could make my own schedule. In 2019 there was a sudden increase in quality of machine translations and my work dried up overnight. I was spending hours a day hustling for work only to find small, low-paying jobs and editing machine translations to teach software to better do my job for me. I was well into my own process of recovery thanks to attachment work and had long wanted to work with others as a coach. My teacher and mentor suggested I offer a class on attachment and start to work with clients individually. I didn’t believe I was ready and, after stalling for weeks, decided to offer a class on a donation-only basis. Seventy people signed up and I found myself teaching on attachment to people from all walks of life, including psychologists. I got a positive response to my class and a few of the students wanted to do one-on-one work and I was able to start my transition to full time teaching and coaching.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My client base has always grown by word of mouth and referrals. I’d say at any given time over 75% of the people I work with have been referred by other clients of mine. My strategy is simple: when I work with someone I care deeply about their plight and seek to provide excellence in supporting them to make the changes they want to make in their lives. Time and time again I see people achieve their dreams and they become enthusiastic about recommending attachment repair to those they know.
