Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Evan Hutchings. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Evan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project i’ve worked on would be publishing a photo book called “The Wig” in 2022. It was such a long process making the book for over two years, and inside the book was five years of pictures. It was special to a me just as much as it was to a whole community. The book covers five years of a local non-profit building and maintaining a DIY skate park in Detroit, MI. At first I didn’t even plan to make a book on the subject, but it came to fruition naturally which is why it is so special to me.
Evan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am photographer based in Detroit, MI. I got into it through a friend who I skateboarded with in high school. Since then I got way more into it then I ever thought I would. I am fascinated with the city of Detroit so I take a lot of pictures of the architecture using 35mm film, and different techniques within that. I have published one book, and want to continue to publish more. My personal goal is to be different, inspire others, and have fun doing so. When I started I had no idea where this could take me and i’m happy with where I am at. I want to continue to sell prints of my pictures, publish books, get published in magazines, and keep learning daily.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say my mission in anything i’ve done is to always be myself. Being an artist to me is creating what you have in your mind and expressing yourself. In my mind I want to be different and experience new things. So try to use that in photography as much as I can. I have my hand in a few different concepts and right now my 35mm film double exposures is mostly what I am focused on. I feel like what i’ve shown from it so far i’m very proud of, as well as what I have saved for the project. I want to show the full series at a gallery eventually, with a book to go with it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part is progressing and not giving up on a goal or image I have tried hard to get. For example the double exposures I achieve take many attempts and a lot of patience to get the way I want. I think once I show the full series people will understand how hard it was and I hope to inspire others to try new stuff and not give up as well. I also love when a new concept or series comes to my mind. The feeling of getting started on something new you like is a great feeling to me.
