We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Evan Hirsch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Evan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
In early 2017, deep in a project to interview people who seemed to have world-changing ideas that aligned with the unification of our human family with the cause of caring for one another and our planet and leaving the pitfalls and catastrophic consequences of capitalism behind, I had a yearning to interview my personal hero in this realm Jacque Fresco, mastermind of The Venus Project. I knew he was extremely elderly and therefore didn’t likely have much time left if I wanted to interview him. Although it didn’t seem practical to abort current local endeavors in California associated with our mission, suddenly a team member announced that she needed to take an urgent trip to see family in Florida, which just so happened to be where The Venus Project is located. So I made the decision to abort current projects and take the team to Florida, after which this particular team member could see her family, and I could see mine, who coincidentally lived in Florida as well.
The interview took place on March 18, at which time Jacque was 101 years old! I felt so lucky to have that opportunity, and it was all I could have hoped it to be. It didn’t become evident the depth of that good fortune until exactly two months later when he died, making mine the last interview of his life. What an incredible experience considering I felt he was the most brilliant man on Earth, and since his passing I know of no successor to that throne, at least by my standard. The content of that interview became the core of a documentary our team made called A World Worth Imagining; Jacque Fresco – The Man with the Plan, which we released in 2019. The film stands as a touching tribute to his life’s work and the magnitude of his visionary brilliance, as well as an overview of his ideas, proposals, accomplishments, and hopes for the future of humanity and our planet. To this day, I know of no other plan so comprehensive, inclusive, humane, and intelligent as his.
Evan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The S.O.U.L. Documentary project was a partnership formed by Kip Baldwin and myself to explore ways to change the world by infusing the concept of LOVE (the all caps kind) into every area of life possible, and to acknowledge the damage caused by the institutionalization of fear to divide and conquer humans by pitting us against one another and distracting us from solving the endless myriad of problems that were created in so doing. The entire project was my form of philanthropy. Since I saw virtually no non-profit organizations in the world working on this topic at this level, we were compelled to be the ones to fill this void. I was simply researching worthy stories to pursue, interviewing insightful individuals who could shed light on the opportunities to employ this level of thought and action, and applying skills developed in acting and writing school to be the on camera personality to deliver the message to our human family.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
After inheriting money and no longer needing to work, I pursued self serving endeavors of amusement to make the most out of a life I was living for myself. I was a partying, promiscuous jet-setter, and relished the experiences I lapped up along the journeys across the globe. When I decided to leave my more self indulgent life behind, the sole intention was to do something more purpose driven in an effort to make a contribution to humanity and use my brain, image, and creative output to nudge the direction of our common course toward one of mutual support and thriving, and away from the divisive and corrosive agendas of business and governments. In other words, literally saving us humans from our destructive ways. Ultimately, this led to the work I have been doing for the last eight years, which is currently expressed in making music with powerful messaging for cultural shifts toward more purposeful living.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Stemming from the work I did in writing my (yet completed) book Secret Powers of Love, my mission has been to share the insights I have on the nature of why human behavior propels us in the direction of purpose defeating self harm, the harm of others, and the destruction of our relationships and harmony with one another. The human brain has been studied quite a bit, and one thing that is clear is that we draw premature conclusions from insufficient information, based upon emotional and environmental factors, and then use those conclusions to drive our behavior even if it does not serve a worthy value system, our actual goals, or even our own well being or that of those about whom we care. Our emotions (including fear) are powerful mechanisms designed to enable our survival. However, given the programs set in our brains from young ages based on competitive drives which foster feelings of inadequacy, we miss the naturally occurring impulses that push us toward one another for mutual support. We are clearly a tribal/pack animal who could never have survived this far on our own. Therefore, my theory is that it will be the process of banning together, by bridging the cultural divides and shedding the crippling fear based emotions, that enables us to survive, and even thrive, for a lengthy and fruitful future.
