We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Evan Enslow. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Evan below.
Evan , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
One can dream. If I had known working behind the camera was as creative and fulfilling as it is, I would have gone to film school. Or maybe business school. Or at minimum, gotten on set every chance I had when I was fresh in the LA scene. The American Academy of Dramatic Arts was an excellent school, but the survival job frontier can be bleak and exhausting. Putting my initial energy more directly into Film and TV certainly would have planted stronger roots in the passions I care most about. Instead, I went the classic route as a struggling actor slinging pasta. It has in fact all come together but by golly, I’ve had to work really, really hard. Of course, I’m grateful for the acting roles I’ve booked along the way. Becoming a Beverage Director, Events Coordinator, Personal Trainer, etc. I’ve loved each in their own way and have all better prepared me for building my own production company, EN MEDIA. The creative projects I’m currently working on are going extremely well and I’m very excited for my artistic work to begin to supersede the hustle.
Evan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My point of view, commitment and inspiration come from years of binging half hour comedies, a large family whom I love, and a never ending quest for self improvement. I find no greater challenge for myself than working in the entertainment field. Whether it was “I Love Lucy” or “The Office”, keeping an audience engaged, laughing and experiencing something human and relatable is all I could hope for. Plus, I truly love helping to organize creative people and discovering how best to see them thrive.
After school, I was in an Off-Broadway Production of “The Columbine Project” that moved my cat Tobi and I to NYC. As an Actor i’ve also worked in Voiceover (Google, Sonos, Red Dead Redemption) and Film/TV (Blue Bloods, Shadow of Doubt) among other credits.
I first worked as a Producer in 2015 on “Harlem Knights” (NYTVF Nominated) and didn’t find myself back until 2020 when I launched Enslow Enterprises LLC and EN Media. Social Media, Personal Training, and a decent acting resume set the inspiration to build out a larger platform and take control of the content I wanted to devote my time too.
My production partner, Erin Anne MacDonald, and I created “CARE,” our first short film(drama). Multiple nominations(Ensemble, Actress, Cinematography) , wins(Best Georgia Film, Audience Choice, Indie Spirit) and several other official selections across the country have led us to a plethora of new and exciting projects.
Most notably, “Vicky’s Big Break”, a horror-comedy feature in development with Big Break Pictures LLC. Follow our instagram @vickysbigbreak
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
How to be perfect and that it will literally never happen. Not only is perfectionism impossible but was actually a massive roadblock into discovering who I am, what I want, and what’s possible. I got straight A’s in school, cleaned my room and parted my hair. Being a creative is flawed, dark and misshapen. My setbacks and limitations were the biggest lessons I’ve ever learned. I remember when something didn’t work much more easily than when it did. I found in myself, that trying to do everything right meant I was just trying TO BE like everyone else. I needed to be me. I needed to take risks. I needed to make mistakes. I have found much more joy and fulfillment in accepting supposed errors in myself and letting the world run off my shoulders.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have been lucky enough to work in the same restaurant(Salumeria Rosi) for eleven years. Not only am I a captain waiter but I also lead the beverage program and private events. As someone who has chosen to live a sober life, the cocktail and wine program certainly challenges me but gives me another space to be creative. While many of my acting peers have found a waiter job to be a total waste of time, I decided to commit. Whatever it is I am doing, I do it well. Salumeria Rosi has supported me and provided some of the biggest opportunities I’ve had in my creative endeavors, for which I am very grateful. Not to mention, the food is very nice! Simultaneously, when I started EN Media, I became a Personal Trainer at BUF Personal Training. I knew it was time to shake up the survival game and fitness was an obvious choice. I enjoyed my time in the gym very much and knew working with others would be gratifying; it pushes me to push myself. The combination and balance I have found between gigs, is just another step on my journey. If I have any hope to make it in the big city, Hollywood or the entertainment industry as a whole, I’ve just gotta keep putting one foot in front of the other.
