We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Evan Edwards a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Evan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Yes, I am very happy as an artist and creative. It’s a core part of who I am. I’ve thought about having a regular job before, especially during challenging projects when things feel difficult or unpredictable. The last time I had that thought, I was working late on a project with a deadline approaching. It was late and quiet except for the pencil on my paper, and I felt the weight of self-doubt creeping in. I remember wondering if it would be easier to have a job with clearer expectations, set hours, and a consistent paycheck. However, I realized that despite the challenges, I enjoy the freedom and creativity my work allows. Being able to explore ideas, express myself, and share stories through my art brings me a sense of fulfillment that outweighs the occasional stress. The idea of giving up artistic expression doesn’t feel right to me. So while the thought of a regular job crosses my mind sometimes, it helps me appreciate the creative path I’ve chosen and the personal growth it encourages.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Evan Edwards, and I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina. I am currently studying Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. My artistic focus centers around animal and pet-based illustrations, with a specialization in creating portraits of beloved pets. What sets my work apart is the unique technique I employ in my portraits. I use a combination of ink and gum arabic to craft pieces with a luminous, glowing quality that is difficult to achieve with traditional pencils or paints. This niche approach allows me to bring my subjects to life in a special and captivating way.
As an illustrator, I offer a range of services to help clients visualize their ideas. Whether it’s illustrations for a book, branding or logo designs for companies, event flyers, or personalized art pieces, I work closely with clients to bring their visions to reality.
One of my proudest achievements so far has been having my greeting cards featured in a few local shops, which has given me the joy of seeing my art resonate with the community. I am passionate about using my skills to create meaningful and memorable artwork that not only captures the essence of the subject but also connects deeply with the viewer. The main things I want potential clients and followers to know about my work are my commitment to quality, originality, and the personal touch I bring to each project. My goal is to create art that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant, making each piece truly special for those who commission or purchase it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To support artists and create a strong creative community, society must recognize the value of creative work. One way to show this recognition is by funding for the arts, such as grants and artist residencies that offer crucial financial help. Investing in arts education at all levels encourages creativity from a young age and builds a lasting appreciation for the arts in the community. When people buy directly from local artists, they help sustain their livelihoods and keep a lively local art scene. Buying locally made art also strengthens the personal connection between the artist and the buyer. Engaging with artists through purchases, attending events, and interacting on social media truly allows for a thriving and vibrant creative community.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative for me is being able to bring others joy through my work. Seeing the positive reactions and emotional connections people have to my art is incredibly fulfilling. It motivates me to continue creating and sharing my work with the world. Helping to create special memories for others and getting to meet them adds even more joy to my experience as an artist. Connecting with those who appreciate my work fosters a sense of community and shared appreciation for creativity.
