We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Evan Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Evan below.
Evan, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
Being a freelance videographer I have a lot of thoughts about the public and private educational system on how they could best help students build a good foundation of skills in the career that want to go in. When I was growing up I was fortunate enough to have a video tech school attached to my high school that allowed me to experiment and learn about the career I was interested in. After graduating high school I attended a local trade school for videography and photography which allowed me to get real world experience and help me build a diverse portfolio of work. I believe that this is one of the best ways to learn and pursue a creative field! Knowing what I know now about four year colleges that teach film I am astounded by the lack of real world experiences and diverse projects given to students. I believe we can prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career by allowing them to explore and try out the fields they are interested in a realistic environment. After my time in trade school I was able to accurately know how my freelance job to go which allowed me to be prepared and have a more fulfilling career. I’ve seen a huge shift recently in the amount of students that are self taught and people who learn in non traditional more creative ways and I cant wait to see this new wave of creatives take take over the field!
Evan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Evan Davis and I run a freelance videography business in Maryland! I got into this field after being inspired by seeing so many talented videographer around which led me to start creating short films with friends. When it came time to decide what I wanted to do for a career I knew it would have to do something with videography. My professional work mainly consists of corporate work, event coverage, and wedding videos. I truly love all aspects of video and have a ton of fun working on these projects, but my favorite thing to do is directing and creating music videos. I love getting to be as creative as I can to create unique visuals by using a mix of VFX and claymation. I have been very fortunate to travel around America to create videos for all different kinds of companies!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest saying when making creative content is “my goal has always been to make cool videos with cool people”. It’s simple but true. I’ve always loved working with other creatives allowing our ideas to mix and create all kinds of unique ideas. This has been a goal that has stuck with me for a long time and I don’t see it going away anytime soon!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to create something from start to finish and seeing how the idea grows and changes over time. A year ago I had an idea for this mixed media project where I would be combining claymation and live action video together to make them interact. At the time I really had no idea on how to properly do that but I recently got to sit myself down and work on this project and get it to a finished product. Being able to look at a video that I saw grow and seeing what I learned in action is one of the best feelings!
