Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eva Haimovich. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eva, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I know it’s clichè but I feel that I was meant to be in this profession. Since I remember myself I was always attracted to stage and the craft of performing arts. I was always fascinated with the idea you can be someone or something else even if it’s for a few minutes. I remember particularly one of my first experiences on stage when I was 6 years old, playing the role of , believe it or not, a tree, in a children’s production of Red Riding Hood. It was as if I stepped into a different realm where I existed as a tree and the second I got off stage I was like “let’s do it again! I want to do it again!”. That was it. That’s where the destiny showed itself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my engagement with stage when I was only 3 years old. I was training as part of the rhythmic gymnastics team in my hometown in Israel. When I was 6 I auditioned for a local performing arts school called “Haboostan” and got in to the dance department. I began my ballet and contemporary dance training then. The school’s motto was always that an artist should be capable to be as well rounded as possible and strive to know and explore many forms of art in order to fulfill its job which is to create. This always inspired me and I really felt in my early teen years so joined the theatre department in the school as well. I became apart of the school’s Production team which meant we got to work with various choreographers, directors, musicians and create original works which we performed with in many festivals. These years really formed me as a human being and an artist since I kept finding out how curious I am about this world and how this profession is allowing me to ask those questions and explore the possible answers to them. I then continued my professional education at AMDA( The American Musical and Dramatic Academy) where I majored in Musical Theatre. It really combined all the forms of art I was passionate about(singing, acting and dancing) so I knew it was the right path for me to take in order to keep my research as an artist. Straight out of school, I was fortunate enough to perform in various cabarets and to work with the famous off Broadway theatre Gallery Players. I was cast in Stephen Sondheim’s production of Assasins as well as Aeschylus’ Oresteia.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Apart from telling stories and entertainment, I truly believe that my personal mission as a artist is to heal. If you think about it, art is a form of healing and can sometimes touch our souls very deep.
And I always felt this way. I know that my role in this world is to “reach” people with my abilities to dance, act or sing (or all 3 of them).
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think the biggest question I get is how do you survive, or aren’t you scared to not have stability in your career. The answer is no. Because stability, in my opinion, is an illusion created by society. I often ask myself if I’m happy while I’m not necessarily engaged in a project, and just auditioning. My answer is always yes since as long as I’m in harmony with my soul, I’m content. All the technical rest doesn’t really matter and is always solvable. But you being inline with your own self is the tougher task.
