Eva , appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
When you think of pursuing music as a recording artist, you don’t think about examining your image and what you look like. This shouldn’t be one of the most important parts but it is. I usually thought it was by the voice you have and the manner in which you act. I didn’t understand this while debuting into the music industry with my single “Selfish” back in 2020. I was new and didn’t really have a platform. Over the years I moved in a multitude of avenues that helped me venture and gain new fans, watchers, and of course non-supporters. There’s a saying that any press is good press but I don’t completely agree. The one thing I feel I have dealt with a lot is my facial image. No, it’s not the way I dress myself or the way I walk into a room but rather, the way I was born structurally and damage that changed it. When you meet people, you have conversations, you video chat, you take photos- these all have everything to do with your face. Your face is the main part of your identity. Growing up I did a lot of silly things like running fast into corner walls damaging structures that now change the perception of how others treat me, talk about me, and look at me. Due to this, I not only have facial chin damage from walls and a scar to prove it, I have a scar on the side of my right eye also from that wall. I’ve had a hard time trying to convey who and what I am in today’s society and it can be easy to be misunderstood based on just looks. This did some mental damage early on. I realized that even though I did not have to share this, it is another way of sharing a part of myself to get closer to my supporters. I receive negative comments on my facial appearance confusing people about my gender. It doesn’t surprise me though that there are people out there who can be so rude. However, I am here to set the record straight and state that yes, I am a born female and I respect everyone who stands up for who they are no matter their birth gender or not. The other thing I tend to have an issue with is my eye. I was diagnosed with an eye condition at birth called “ Strabismus” (both Hypotropia and Esotropia). I also have astigmatism in this eye as well. I am a very confident woman and I love myself enough to share these stories about my difficulties now. Sharing these stories are a part of being human and connecting to one another. Between these two things, I know that I do not have to prove anything to anyone but I’ve always kept this out of the public eye. I was ashamed and embarrassed of having to share something so personal with the rest of the world due to negative, biased, and untrue commentary. I recently did a TikTok video explaining my eye condition due to so many people targeting it as if I didn’t know already and I received wonderful and supportive feedback for it and I couldn’t be more happy that I did it. This made me feel stronger than ever before. I plan on doing the same for other issues I have in the future because we need to normalize things like this so others don’t feel alone. Although I am looking into structurally correcting these in the future, I just want others to know that you are beautiful the way you are and you do not need to change for anyone.
Eva , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, I’m Eva Constance. I am a recording artist living in South Florida and I’ve been singing since I was 6 or 7 years old. I started in my grandmother’s church choir. By age 12, I started recording and writing songs. I debuted in 2020 with my single “Selfish” which grew tremendously. I followed after with 3 other tracks- “Tangler”, “Forget Me”, and the latest single “Energy”. Each song did well but “Forget Me” became my first #1 iTunes track after “Selfish” and still dominates. I feel that my exotic look and voice sets me apart from other artists. I always get compliments like “You have a very unique look” or “Your voice is so different”. I honestly feel that it’s better to have your own lane and stand tall in your uniqueness because that’s what is winning in the industry today. I am very proud of every project that I have done but I am very proud of “Forget Me” because it’s an anthem for those who work hard to achieve a goal others didn’t think you would ever get. I am very proud that it’s also my #1 iTunes track out of all of them because of the message. I have been taking it easy with putting out music this whole year because of school but I will be graduating next May so I will be able to fully focus on music more and I can’t wait. Although I haven’t released music this year, I have been recording music behind the scenes and I currently have two songs I will be releasing early next year called “Handle It” and “Donne-Le Moi”. If you didn’t know, I have a French background and the last two years I have been learning more about my French background and learning to speak and write in French. “Donne-Le Moi”, which means, “Give It To Me”, has a French chorus with a few French words added in other areas of the song to give it a bilingual approach. I am so excited for both tracks to be released so stay tuned.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal with my career in music is to be as successful as those I look to. I would love the opportunity to gain representation, a team, and even a contract with a label. I look up to a multitude of artists and they all have something that makes others know who they are just by something particular with their sound, voice, or wearing a certain style. I want to distinguish myself from other artists coming up. Things are getting so mashed together nowadays that everything is starting to sound the same. I want to sell out arenas and perform all around the world. There are artists that have that one person who believes that they have what it takes to be a superstar and I want to have a team that believes in me and my dream. It’s easy to blend in when it’s popular but when you’re different you have a chance to change the path and that can make you stand out even more. I also want to be in a position to give back to my family for all of their hard work raising me, helping me, and supporting my goals as a music artist.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my career is when I have others who know the words to my songs and share them. It warms my heart and makes me want to cry. Everything I record comes from the heart and has some sort of emotion attached to it so I appreciate that others can take the time to understand, connect, learn, and sing the words. Every bit of support I have now and forward means the world to me.
