We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eunike Tanzil. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eunike below.
Hi Eunike, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I was introduced to the art of film scoring when I was an undergrad student at Berklee College of Music. However, my musical journey began way back. My parents enrolled me into piano lessons when I was 5. From there, I began to improvise during my free time and I realized I enjoyed improvising more than practicing certain pieces on the piano.
I wished I started finding a composition mentor far earlier in my career who could introduce me to DAW production and give me resources in terms of getting better at composing and orchestration. I think it is important to be resourceful and curious when it comes to training your brain to stay creative and translating that creativity into a piece of art.
Some obstacles would be being consistent, managing my time between school, practice, and it takes time and effort to meet up with the right people who support what I was aspiring to do and could open doors for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a film composer who is passionate about creating content that inspires people to be creative. People on social media know me from videos of myself composing music on the flight and producing music based on random people’s hums. I write and produce music. My music covers a wide range of styles from orchestral, electronic, to cinematic. I help other artists/companies such as directors, brands, and other artists to have the right music for their films/games/advertisement/performance.
As an industry professional, my recent credits include “Asian Persuasion (2023), “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (2022), and “Be Somebody” (2021), a Chinese feature film. I also have worked with prolific film composer Jeff Danna. In 2021, I assisted him as the score coordinator for “The Addams Family 2”, My piano playing can be heard on film and TV scores such as Netflix’s Chicago Party Aunt.
In 2020, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Berklee College of Music where I honed my skills in composition, film scoring, and conducting. In 2023, I graduated my Master’s Program at the Juilliard School, from which I received a full scholarship. My mentors include oscar-winning composer John Corigliano, John Debney through the AWFC (Alliance for Women Film Composers) mentorship program, and “Captain Marvel” composer, Pinar Toprak through the Real Change Grant.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The rewarding aspect of being an artist is I get to collaborate with many amazing artists. For instance, I met an animator I now collaborate with through TikTok, after seeing the animatic she created inspired by my music.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think having organizations that support artists with grants and financial funding to produce the best artwork possible would be a tremendous support for musicians and artists who are starting out in their careers. For instance, it is expensive to produce an album without the support of a label, so having grants that could cover the production and distribution costs could give artists more exposure and help them thrive in this competitive industry.
