We were lucky to catch up with Euan Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Euan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Was one of those cloudy-overcast, Boston weather days, back in the mid 90″s. Myself and 2 other barbers were sitting around waiting for a cut to walk in.
At one moment a promoter for a local promotion came in soliciting his event. That sparked the thought “why do promoters and other agencies have to walk from shop to shop to connect with us all”? In that moment I was literally downloaded! I saw visions of shops connected. I saw tv’s and touch screens. I saw the commerce of several shop environments. And I last saw BarberTime is red letters, on a brick wall, floating across as if it were a transition on an editing software.
On the exact moment I did a thinkers pose and said “its BarberTime”! Right then, the sun broke through the clouds and gave off an almost perfect glow and sunray over the cross at the top of the church, that was visible from the buildings rear window.
I quickly mentioned to the 2 other barbers, “do you see that”? Both responding to the sun coming out, but of course I was referring to what I knew was a very difficult purpose and blessing. It has proven itself every step of the way. During that moment I knew if I wasn’t able to find someone to invest a million bucks (yeah right), it would take me 20 years to get to what I envisioned. And here I am 20 plus years later evolving into reality.
(btw, this is an awesome way to collect content!! Cheers!!!)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I originally never wanted to be a barber although I was highly skilled at a young age. It wasn’t until I ordered an at home entrepreneur kit, that had some wooden trinket stuff I had to assemble and sell. I threw that **** out and got my ass to barber school. I was 21 then.
Prior to that I had worked in different barbershops since I was 17. But I wasn’t seeing it as a career, just something I was good enough at.
In short barbering changed my life and MANY others. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial eye, so when I settled into being a barber I noticed the environment was slept on. The commerce and relationships were all something that was real and could be harnessed.
Just recruiting people from your chair can get you into whatever you believe you can go towards. It’s the place I met my wife and every important member of my board. MIT, Harvard grads and successful business owners.
It’s a very fulfilling career to those it’s built for.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funding for this business has been difficult. The lack of the actual platform and a comparison of model makes it difficult. We are creating business via outreach and marketing campaigns to fund our way into existence.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We plan to build an ecommerce presence vial the barber & stylists ability to promote or be a liaison for many types of business entities. Given our clients confide and act upon our advise, we indirectly sell all types of “stuff’! I just recently got a client to go for the Porche over a BMW. Tooth pastes, food, music, movies, you name it. We get things sold, and our plan to to have a built in ecommerce portal for these creative entrepreneurs.
