We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ethan Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ethan below.
Ethan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Going into my Senior year of college, the past few years have been a crazy rollercoaster of emotions, especially when it comes to watching my friends grow up and enter this thing people keep calling “the real world”. “Just wait until you get into the real world”, adults would say. Growing up, I’ve always been an observer of nature when it comes to trying to understand the world around me and dissect what is actually going on when it comes to people behavior. With my college experience, I’ve observed that my peers are all being thrown into this “real world” that everyone makes out to seem so scary when really, they just have no idea what they want to do with their lives, which is so fair! How are we supposed to know? We are trafficked into jobs and school for as long as we can remember. Being taught how to survive rather than to live! This is where the idea for Narration Creative Studios came from. My original depiction of what it could turn into, is a community where people can find their passions through creative outlets/projects that we are doing, and what a journey it has been! Only 6 months in and we have made 3 music videos, the start of an interview series, and we have been having a blast doing it! Music video production is what Narration Creative Studios has turned into, but long term, it will be an outlet for many other creatives. A cabinet of young leaders ready to pave the way on a meaningful and passionate journey of content creation, that will change the creative workspace for all of time! Thats what we are about :)
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Ethan Smith and I am currently going into my Senior year at Michigan State University. I got into video production through a student ran business in East Lansing known as “More than Vintage”. Inspired by the completely student ran and owned store, I took full advantage of developing social media and content creation skills through the stores social media pages. During this time I started my own production studio called “Narration Creative Studio”, a space for creatives to find their passions and create amazing visual and audio content of their choosing. Our team thus far as embarked on a journey of making music video for local Lansing artists. The idea to do this came to us through the idea of our brand image which is supporting creators alike to help promote their own work! What better way to do so then high quality, creative and fun music videos! Growing up I loved the story behind many of my favorite music videos so I thought “hey, I have a camera, let’s make this Narrations first big project series!”. Working closely with the artists vision of their songs as well as making collaborative insight, the videos we have made so far are definitely something to be proud of! With our team of three so far, I am most proud of the growth I’ve seen so far in all of us. Matt Bonham and Will Young both take lead in various roles such as wardrobe, animations, script writing, and on set direction. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them. We’re essentially the three musketeers of the music video world lol. If you were to know anything about our work or service, its that we know the struggle of coming up on your creations and not seeing any results. We take pride in making our work as high quality and fitting to our clients (which turn into friends lol) vision as we can, and we want to see their success! Thats what makes it all worth it :) We look forward to working with more artists and meeting new people to bring onto the team!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Our story thus far and the people we work with show extreme resilience! As other creatives know, the biggest struggle is getting people to be as passionate about your creations as you are! Getting traction and traffic to your pages, music, and content is near impossible at the start! But its not! Building a community is huge and thats exactly why we are taking these steps to connect with more people who want to work with us :)
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The process for sure! It has to be the process! As crazy as it sounds, I love being resilient to low likes and low views. We are proud of our work and I know when people see it, they will enjoy it too! You have to be a little bit crazy to be in this field but I’ve met some of the coolest people who are artists who just have that drive in them to keep working and improve every-time. There’s magic in it for sure!
