We recently connected with Ethan Rasmussen and have shared our conversation below.
Ethan , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Homestead Hands is focused on “Helping people provide for themselves and those around them.” We believe that the skills required to produce food efficiently and sustainably are beneficial to everyone in our communities. Our company is comprised of specialists who enjoy teaching our clients how to easily become successful. Our founder, Ethan Rasmussen, is a first-generation producer and found his passion for quality food production behind herds of grass-fed beef and fixing fences in the unita mountains. This passion is woven throughout every aspect of Homestead Hands. We are here to help beginning and struggling producers to find guidance and excitement as they learn how to cultivate food from their property.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The inspiration behind Homestead Hands sprouted as Ethan Rasmussen trailed his horse behind hundreds of cows on the Arizona strip. He wasn’t raised with an agricultural background, but in 2013 he got his first taste of quality agricultural production and was permanently hooked. During the next decade working on multiple agricultural operations, he learned what it meant to be a producer focused on high-quality food products. He witnessed the passion within individuals who are focused on providing good food for the world. Years later Homestead Hands was founded in 2021 with the principle purpose to “Help people provide for themselves and provide for those around them.” We established a team of consultants who specialize in soil science, horticulture, agricultural design, and small animal production. Each individual who has joined the Homestead Hands team has a passion to help others succeed and a love of agriculture. We reached out to friends, family, and neighbors who could potentially use our services and began what we set out to do!
We are creating a network of hard-working people who desire better health and function in their lives, community, land, and people around them. We believe that we all have a responsibility to effectively use the resources available to us and sometimes that requires a little guidance. We provide on-site property evaluations for each of our clients. Each project includes soil samples, microclimate evaluations, resource identification, and property measurements. On every project, we focus on the individual nature of each property (From a backyard garden to a full-time farm). Every person and every acre is unique and therefore deserves special attention. Our network of specialists ensures that every customer gets exactly the right service that they need. Our goal is to help you be as successful as possible in your pursuit of developing greater Independence, Self-reliance, and Security.
Our clients often come to us looking for help improving their current farm/ homestead or looking for help to get one started. We work with each of our clients to help them outline the changes they would like to make to their property, and the best way to accomplish them. Our services range from a one-time visit, to complete landscape design with recommendations for the next 5 years of development and a soil test analysis. With each project we help our clients implement sustainable and regenerative practices on their property.
Compared to other companies, we are proud to provide you with access to multiple specialists rather than a single opinion to help you on your property. Every customer receives personal conversations with the specialists needed for their property. We know that agricultural production has multiple layers, so we are proud to provide you with a team to help.
Additionally, we work hard to give back to our local communities and provide food to those around us. This year we started our Giving Growers program in Cache Valley (it will begin the first week in August). Our Giving Growers program provides an opportunity for local gardeners and producers to donate their excess produce to those in need within the valley. By participating in our donation drop zones Giving Growers every donor will be able to track their donations throughout the year and help improve their community.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Our company raised initial funding by working side-by-side individuals who needed help on their farms and homesteads throughout the state of Utah. This time allowed us to quickly build up enough capital to start our company. It also allowed us to spend time working with individuals who own their own farms and homesteads and how we can better serve them.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We are grateful for every client that chooses us to help them more sustainably produce food on their property. We keep in touch with our clients after the first month that they begin to implement their plan on their own as well as a year after our initial consultation. We understand that there are many unexpected challenges that can occur as you work to produce your own food, so we make sure that we are always available to help our clients succeed.
