We recently connected with Ethan Hoffman and have shared our conversation below.
Ethan , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Corona was my first painting, created in collaboration with my “padrinos” who introduced me to the world of art. I moved in with them during COVID, and while the world was in lock down we started creating paintings with leftover house-paint in a Jackson Pollock inspired style. The way Pollock dripped paint and made himself an instrument for painting with his pulse really spoke to me. Also, I wasn’t well versed with a paint brush yet, but I am deeply connected to my body. The process was therapeutic, taking it one layer at a time, and having a way to express the pain, fear, and uncertainty we felt as a family and society. We felt from the beginning that Corona was a once in a generation moment, and as time has passed it has become even more meaningful. The pandemic was my pathway into art, and Corona gave me the confidence that I had the creative spirit within me. The more art I create, the more grateful I am to have gone with the flow and engaged in this meaningful project. Art has become a way of life for me and has enriched my spirit 10 fold. And now, thanks to my business degree, I’ve turned Corona into a textile for our brand’s golf shirts. We turned a negative into a positive.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Ethan Hoffman of EMH Designs. We are a collaboration of artists that create unique abstract mixed media visual art and photography and sell high quality artistic and luxurious clothing. EMH was born from a committee of artists coming together who all see the unity between art, creativity, and freedom of expression where everything is art. I’m a Social Worker, but our artists have had a unique hodgepodge of careers and life experiences. We’ve been creating together for years with a tight knit following of free spirits, and we are now entering our second year in the textile industry. We’re an enigma in the worlds of art, design, and fashion, which is representative in our diverse portfolio: From Delicate Line drawings to emotional gestures with hands acting as brushes to simplified expressions of household items, the creative styles and influences of EMH artists run the gamut. We’ve continued this diversity in the clothing brand as well starting with 2 alternating lines: the “E-Line” which is original paintings printed on garments, and ‘Silent Luxury’ which are elegant Polo shirts that exude quality with a timeless look and our signature logo.
Our Art has a distinct frequency and pulse to it, pieces have a spirit with meaning and depth, a story behind it. Our followers are able to connect deeply and communicate feelings that arise when they interact with our works. After years of creating the EMH Logo was the origins of transitioning from creative enjoyment to full on brand, We were so inspired by the unanimous excitement of the logo that we began building the business out and exposure of the now trademarked logo. I’m so proud of how we all at EMH co-exist and collaborate with common goals in mind, a testament to true selflessness. We’ve created some great works and are sharing a unique vision with the world. Our goal is to transcend boundaries, creating a space where the mysteries of art and intricacies of life unfold as uniqueness takes center stage. We invite you to Join us in our exploration of the intersectionality of creativity, collaboration, and mental well-being.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Engaging with and Enjoying art. The more I create, the greater my appreciation grows for powerful pieces. Being able to connect deeply and be moved beyond words is a special feeling. We’re exposed to so much content, but so little sticks out. Delving into my creative side has given me great admiration for truly beautiful works, which are so rare to come-by. It takes a special energy at the right time and place to create art. When I’m able to express an insightful or meaningful message through a work I made is priceless. And when a piece by another artist speaks to me it humbles and reminds me to listen to the message someone else is communicating. Life is about slowing down, and I don’t move when I’m hypnotized by a piece I just can’t look away from, usually accompanied by a smile.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was 21, Summer after my Junior year in college. Recently evicted from my home, barely passing classes, and anxious for the impending future of life post-graduation with no idea of what I wanted to do. I was lost and confused like a desert wanderer without a Bedouin guide to navigate the stars. I knew I needed help and thought meditation would be good for me. I had never meditated before, but one of friends gave a second hand referral from one of their friends who did a 10 day silent meditation course that really helped them. I blindly signed up on that recommendation and ended up in Texas farmland for 10-days of no talking, reading, writing, or technology, and over 40 hours of cumulative meditation. That experience really changed my life, it brought over me a great calm and acceptance of life’s impermanence. and ever-changing nature. I became hyper-efficient afterwards and felt like I caught up on months of my life in weeks. It gave me a more holistic patient approach to life, and I’m now going back for my 2nd retreat to start the new year.
