We recently connected with Ethan Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Ethan, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started singing at a very young age, but never in front of anyone. My fear of sharing a gift I didn’t even really know I had was so overwhelming, I couldn’t even sing in front of my family. At 17, I decided to finally give it a shot and enter a singing competition and sing in front of about 600 people! Had I known how rewarding that experience would feel, I would have conquered my fear much earlier on. I practiced and practiced to be the best I could be and I know ultimately that helped me feel more comfortable and at peace on stage. No matter how much doubt would enter my mind, I always pushed through and kept going because I was certain that was what I was meant to do. I knew since I was a child I wanted to to be a singer, I just needed the courage to actually make it happen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
It always surprises me how one decision can change your life forever. Since that local competition, I’ve been presented with many incredible opportunities. In the years following, I took part in competitions and released original music as well as placed as a semi-finalist on American Idol. I’ve moved to Nashville and have played many cool gigs along the way. My ambitions have always stayed the same, but my abilities and comfortability with who I am as an artist have blossomed. I write my own music and I tell stories about my life (even when it’s not ideal.) I allow myself to be vulnerable and strive to connect with those who are kind enough to give my music a chance. Even though my heart told me I would be a singer someday, to actually live it and to still have so much passion is an experience I cherish. I am at a place in my life where it is just a part of who I am. It is no longer a dream I’m chasing but a reality I’m living.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, getting to share my passion with the world is the most rewarding feeling I have ever felt. It took me years to be the artist that I am today and it wasn’t always easy. I feared rejection and listened to those who told me I wasn’t good enough and that my voice was “obnoxious.” I allowed myself to doubt my abilities all because some people didn’t like what they heard when I sang. I could have 20 people tell me they loved my voice and one who didn’t and I would dwell on that one. That is not the way to successfully pursue a goal. I love what I do and I love how I’ve chosen to do it. Some may like it and some may not, and that’s ok. Coming to that realization is a powerful feeling that makes those hardships worth while.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is just to be happy and make people happy. As humans, we all experience very similar things. To creatively speak/sing about these experiences is a way to connect and heal. Music is a universal tool everyone can relate to. You hear stories all the time about how a song or a lyric saved someone and to contribute in any way to that is a win!
