Alright, Esther thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
I would change the way students are taught to be good communicators.
Yes, I would share my story on how I learned to be a better communicator and how this has helped me to shape my career choices.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name Esther Rogers and I am an art director and illustrator with over 20 years of experience in the art industry.
I got into my current industry with my love of art and wanting to pursue a career that would allow me to be creative and to draw for a living.
I got degree in graphic design and was immediately hired as a designer by a large defense contractor.
I volunteer with non-profit organizations to assist children get into design fields and learn life skills.
As an art director I provide creative direction on company campaigns, presentations and trade show planning. My work includes logos, fact sheets, brochures, newsletters, infographics, presentations and various marketing materials.
As an illustrator, I enjoy creating paintings that include subjects such as animals, people, nature and landscapes. My traditional paintings are done in a variety of mediums such as watercolor, oils and acrylics. My digital paintings are done in Photoshop and Illustrator.
I want readers to know that if they have a passion for arts and to be creative, they do not have to be afraid about having a career in this field.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After 20 years at a company, I was laid off after a large merger. I had to course correct and find other creative opportunities that allowed me to grow as an artist.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish that I had learned to be a better communicator and speaker. This would have allowed me more opportunities to try other creative projects.
Additionally, I would have trained in other creative areas to broaden my skill sets.
