We were lucky to catch up with Esther Déjoie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Esther, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Starting in 2017, the idea for Dejoie Talents emerged after my experience on shows and movies from 2015-2016. Being on set made me realize the common challenges faced by talented individuals, and I wanted to be the one to offer assistance based on my firsthand understanding. Similarly, BulletBarbies came to fruition during my time with the Atlanta Police Department. In anticipation of firearm training, I hired trainers to improve my skills, which led to a deep passion for shooting. Posting about it on various platforms earned me the nickname “BulletBarbie”. Both businesses required extensive research, planning, and adapting to the industry’s dynamics, but today they thrive, enabling me to support and empower others.
Esther, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I come from a family deeply rooted in the entertainment world, with a father who was an actor and a mother who choreographed dances. Growing up, I participated in pageants and later ventured into modeling and fashion shows. My experiences in the industry led me to establish Dejoie Talents, where I provide talent management services to help individuals navigate the entertainment landscape and secure opportunities. Additionally, my passion for firearms and personal safety inspired me to create BulletBarbies, offering training and coaching services in shooting skills. What sets me apart is my unique background in both entertainment and firearms, allowing me to provide a diverse range of services. I am dedicated to empowering individuals, whether it’s helping them succeed in their creative endeavors or enhancing personal safety.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner, Joelle Aliana, on the set of HBO’s Ballers. Joelle is the owner of her own production company, Xamaicaroyals, and has extensive experience in directing and producing music videos. We formed a strong bond on set and have been close ever since. At the time, Joelle’s production company was already starting up, while my agency was still in its early stages. Joelle played a crucial role in helping me understand the business aspect of the industry better, and her guidance and expertise have been invaluable to the growth of our partnership. Together, we complement each other’s skills and work towards creating successful collaborations in the entertainment world.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
