We were lucky to catch up with Estevan The God recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Estevan , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My 6th studio album H-Town Prince has been the most meaningful impactful project I have ever released. I’ve been calling myself the “H-Town Prince”since I was in middle school and to witness how much i have grown & evolved is something to witness. Especially now with Houston becoming one of the main cities in the United States it’s a great time to be a rapper from Houston, Texas. It’s very reminiscent of the times when we had Artist like Mike Jones, Chamillionaire, Slim Thhug. Paul Wall & UGK we’re all dominating radio & tv.
Estevan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began rapping at the age 11 because I have family members that use to rap. An when I was young I went on a school field trip and seen the rapper Lil J Xavier do a concert. Once I saw him I was like I think I can do this. So once I told my family this is what I wanted to do they fully supported me. Around 2005/2006 I started doing talent shows & showcases and really building my skills as a MC & performer, and through the years I got better & better. 2007-2008 I began making demos & mixtapes. I would perform at Mall Events & at schools. I was always ready to do any and everything to show off my rapping skills. 2009- 2011 I rebranded myself as Pretty Boy and that became my whole persona. I had a Pretty Boy chain, all my mixtapes were titled Pretty Boy and i was known as the Pretty Boy Rapper from Houston. 2012-Now I evolved into GUAPO. GUAPO has not only been my AKA name but also my brand. I’ve had the pleasure of creating a Magazine called GUAPO Market that had the talented Megan Thee Stallion graced the cover of the October Issue in 2016 before she was the big famous Superstar she is now.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
What Queer Society can do when it comes to other Queer artist such as myself, is just push the need for that representation a little more. Post Gay Rappers on your timelines more, promote our music, post our videos. I think queer people should be promoting queer artist just as much as they doing Heterosexual Artist. It’s not easy for us but it helps us keep pushing knowing we have a community behind us wanting us to win. Even if u have to go out and search for those Queer artist, It so many outlets where they can be found…instead of liking an artist because they’ve been forced down your throats through radio, tv & billboard marketing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing I’ve been experiencing is having people relate to my music & to me as a person. People love my style & the uniqueness I bring to hiphop. Sometimes I’m so focused on my next moves or the next music video, photoshoot or studio session. When people do tell me certain details that they like I’m so shocked but it’s definitely a rewarding feeling because its like Wait! They actually paying attention to my art.
