We were lucky to catch up with Estephania Maupome Hildebrant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Estephania, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of learning to paint, but art classes were a luxury my family couldn’t afford. So, instead, I poured my creativity into mastering drawing and the art of coloring. When I moved to the USA, I was thrilled to discover that high school offered free art electives—an opportunity I seized without hesitation! In my senior year, I took a painting class and stumbled upon pointillism, an art style that instantly captivated me. My incredible teacher, Mr. Woodman, encouraged me to keep creating, fueling my passion for painting.
Life took me away from art for a while, but in 2015, I found my way back. By 2017, I had sold my first painting—a milestone that reignited my artistic journey. While pointillism may seem repetitive, every piece I create is unique, each dot forming something new and unexpected. I’ve expanded beyond canvas, experimenting with ceramic, wood, metal—anything that inspires me! My work is a vibrant blend of whimsy, fantasy, psychedelia, and bold colors. Lately, I’ve been exploring primitive, farm-style art, proving that the more you paint, the more you uncover your artistic range.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 33-year-old dreamer who lives and breathes art. My journey has been anything but linear, but every twist and turn has led me to where I am today. I moved to the United States when I was 13 and spent most of my life in San Francisco before relocating to San Diego just six months ago with my husband. Though I haven’t always been a full-time artist, creativity has been my constant companion.
In college, I worked for a catering company and absolutely loved it. There was something exhilarating about being behind the scenes at weddings, corporate events, and private parties—witnessing fleeting, beautiful moments while earning good money (and indulging in great food!). After graduating, I found myself in the tech industry, working as a Community Manager and in client support. Even with a demanding career and weekends filled with catering gigs, I never stopped creating art.
Then, in 2017, something incredible happened. A local coffee shop gave me the opportunity to showcase my paintings for free. I hung them up without any expectations—art was my passion, not my business. But within 24 hours, I sold my first painting. That moment changed everything. It wasn’t just the sale; it was the realization that my art had the power to connect with people. That spark of inspiration led to the birth of Young Anatomy. I started making jewelry and mini art pieces alongside my paintings, selling them at the same coffee shop. What began as a side project grew into something bigger—I started booking art and craft shows, yet I never quit my other two jobs. Looking back, I’m amazed at how I managed it all—working 9 to 5 in tech, catering on weekends, and squeezing in time for friends, family, and art. Mastering time management was a challenge, but when the dream is BIG, the sacrifice is always worth it.
Two years ago, I took the leap—I quit my tech job and fully committed to my art. I kept my catering job because, honestly, it’s fun and gives me the flexibility to continue chasing my dreams.
Now, I create unique, interactive pointillism art—each piece is entirely tactile. I want people to see my art, but more importantly, I want them to feel it. Art isn’t just for the eyes; it should be an experience. I strive to make pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind—hard to replicate, distinct, and full of life. Every dot, every stroke carries a part of me. My greatest hope is that when people see my art, they feel something—joy, wonder, maybe even a little magic.
Life isn’t always easy, and sometimes, we all need a reason to smile. I believe art is one of the most powerful ways to bring happiness into the world. If my work can brighten someone’s day, then every challenge, every sacrifice, and every moment of doubt has been absolutely worth it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I create an art piece, I pour a piece of myself into it—my heart, mind, and soul. Every dot and every detail carries my passion. One of the most rewarding moments comes during art shows when I see people experience my work in real time. I love watching their faces light up as they approach my booth, their eyes wide with excitement. I often hear comments like, “Oh my! Your art is so colorful—it brings me so much joy!” or the sweet voices of children saying, “This is my favorite booth of the fair!” Moments like these mean everything to me.
It’s more than just creating art—it’s about sharing happiness. Knowing that something I created with love can brighten someone’s day is the most incredible feeling. You never know what someone is going through, and if my art can bring a smile or a spark of joy, even for a moment, that means the world to me. Being able to touch people’s hearts through my art is a gift I cherish, and I’m so grateful to spread a little more light and happiness wherever I go.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to become a recognized artist whose work and creative voice leave a lasting impression. I want people to see my art and immediately know, “That’s Young Anatomy.” I dream of my pieces displayed in homes, galleries, and public spaces, sparking joy, curiosity, and connection. But more than just recognition, I want my art to make people feel something—happiness, wonder, or a sense of escape from the everyday.
Every day, I push myself to grow—to sharpen my skills, explore new techniques, and expand my creative mind. I believe an artist’s journey is never-ending; there is always something new to discover and more profound to express. My art reflects who I am and the world I see—vibrant, tactile, and full of life. I’m committed to staying true to my unique style while continuously evolving and challenging myself to reach new heights.
Building a name in the art world requires dedication, perseverance, and heart—and I’m ready for that challenge. I pour my soul into every piece, and I’m working toward that bigger vision with every brushstroke and dot. I want to inspire others to chase their dreams and believe that your passion can create something extraordinary no matter where you come from.
Art is not just what I do—it’s who I am. And every day, I’m one step closer to sharing that vision with the world in a way that will be remembered.
