We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Estelle Fox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Estelle, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
At the age of 6, I told my mom god wanted me to sing. I’ve been an atheist since I knew the meaning of the word so if I didn’t distinctly remember myself curled up in bed mumbling those words then I probably would’ve refuted the story years ago. Still, I think I chose God because of the weight and power of my feelings toward music which I didn’t yet understand were my own. I’d already fallen in love with music performance at that age and my heart was set on it. I was lucky to have a supportive family to aid in my musical education.
Estelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Estelle Fox and I’m a singer-songwriter from PA. I recently released my first full EP with the help of my amazingly supportive producer Barb Morrison. I started piano at the age of 6 and vocal lessons shortly after and have always had the goal of becoming a performing artist. Last year I was finally able to pursue that dream and pursue music as not only a hobby, but a career. My goal in my music has always been to convey the good, bad, and the ugly no matter how uncomfortable or vulnerable I have to be. I think the easiest way to connect and heal is making it authentic to who you are and eventually the audience will come. I think I offer music for a lot of difficult feelings that can help people feel less alone.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is performing and being able to create an authentic connection with your audience. I think as creatives we tend to move on from projects and undervalue them. I know after awhile I’ll get bored of past songs, but performing them can bring back those feelings toward it for yourself and your audience.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Collaboration! I don’t currently have any collaborative works out yet but simply being able to sit down and talk to other writers about lyrics or play with friends is so rewarding and can get you out of a state of writers block or self-doubt.
