We recently connected with Estelle Clairoux and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Estelle, thanks for joining us today. Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
Kindness without honesty is not really kindness, and honesty without kindness is not really honesty. This is a lesson I learned early in my career and something I try to remember as an employer, a friend, and a parent myself. When I first started as an intern for an event production company, I was eager to please. I thought I should always say yes to anything and everything they threw my way. Ultimately I took on more work than I was comfortable managing in order to help others, always claiming that it was fine. My supervisor at the time quickly sat me down and asked how I was doing. He offered me the opportunity to explain myself and tell him the truth. Establishing that solid line of communication shifted the way I worked and made me realize that working too hard without taking time to look after ourselves often results in us working less well or eventually having to stop because we simply can’t keep it up. Being kind but honest is something I strive to do while leading our team at Hey Mr.
Estelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I left Canada at the age of 21 years old and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where I worked as a Media and PR coordinator for an event production company. My work took me around the globe from South America to the beautiful mountains of Colorado. My career took a shift when I got the opportunity to work for one of North America’s most coveted luxury jewelry and specialty retailer (Maison Birks) where I developed multiple million-dollar marketing campaigns with my team.
My love for the outdoors took me back to Colorado where my husband and I later founded Hey Mr. My idea with Hey Mr. was to develop enthusiastically satisfied customers all of the time while establishing ourselves as the premier digital marketing agency in Colorado and beyond. I love Denver and I am making it a standard to source all of our contractors and employees locally to ensure we’re encouraging the local economy. Building a company, while being a mom has taught me to be more empathetic, value other people’s talents and time and to be that comforting ally that my team needs.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I read somewhere that people are 4 times more likely to buy from your business when referred by a friend. This couldn’t be truer for us. Hey Mr was basically built on referrals and to this day are our biggest source of leads. It is proven that new clients that come from referrals go through the sales process faster, seem easier to negotiate with and tend towards greater loyalty.
Any advice for managing a team?
Success at work is directly correlated to creating a business that empowers our employees. This is something Hey Mr has been working on a lot in the last year. We have worked with an HR consultant to develop a more productive and stimulating work environment. Hey Mr introduced half-day Fridays, hybrid schedules, and educational workshops earlier this year as well as free gym memberships and other perks to keep the morale high. That said we are continuously working on improving our processes to make work-life balance and flexible schedule easier. As the COO of Hey Mr this has been on the top of my priorities and something I think about every day as employee happiness is one of the most important factors in running a successful, profitable company.
