We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Estee Kessler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Estee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
When I was a little girl, I was very wild, loud, excited and super energetic. I often had more energy than my parents knew what to do with. Seeing as I was so small, and not sure what to do with all this energy, I would often feel frustrated and angry when I was feeling ignored or told to “settle down.” Needless to say, there were several instances where the only thing i knew how to do was scream to be heard and to, frankly, let out all of my anger and pent-up frustrations.
I had this nanny who was more than that, she became like a second mother to me, and was with me for the entirety of my upbringing. One of the most memorable and kindest moments I’ve ever experiences was when she would take me aside to talk to me. When I was in those fits or rages, it seemed like no one could get close to me, except for her. She would find a way to simply and gently speak to me. She used to tell me that I was a “good girl; very special; kind, and that I didn’t need to scream and throw things to be seen and heard.” Hearing her tell me those things over and over, gave me such a sense of comfort and a feeling of being seen that it stuck with me until today. I will never forget those moments.
The kindest thing that someone can do for you is by being kind, by being gentle, by speaking to you, by listening, and by being there.
That support gave me everything I needed as a child, and from there, planted a very deep seed of self-love, for which I will be eternally grateful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in a very spiritual community, instilling within me morals and values that I’m very grateful for. Ironically enough though, I never consciously put in the effort to really understand myself on such a deep level. I knew parts of who I was and sought to ask the esoteric, soul-searching questions over the years. I really wanted to understand people and how they work, what makes them do the things they do, and how they feel. Over the years and through my experiences and travels, it became very clear to me that my passion for helping people was something that I needed to fulfill and accomplish throughout my life. I suppose it started in high school, rooting for the underdog, my sheer confidence and lack of fear of speaking up, must’ve helped with that. In the last couple of years, I’ve really begun to unravel my own mysteries and deep dive into my own traumas and my own essence. It boiled down to this: unconditional love. That is what I am embodying that is what I love. Love, to me, makes the world go round. Loving yourself, creates infinite possibilities. I wanted to share that with people.
Being as social as I am, I love making friends and hearing people’s life stories, and I’ve found that people do open up and want to share what they know, and I’m eager to listen. So, over the last year, I discovered a mentor, who has been invaluable being in my life and has really help guide me towards the person and business that I have today! As a spiritual life coach, I provide support, cheerleading, confidence-boosting, and tools to help you navigate your insecurities, understand your emotions, and connect with your essence and power of who you really are. The most incredible thing is to show up as you, because that is where our uniqueness lays. No two souls are the same, thus no two people are the same. We all have something special to offer and give, and we all deserve to connect to that!
I work together with clients in the form of 1:1 coaching or in my programs to help them connect to this essence. We form a bond and we partake in this journey together. Everyone deserves to be seen, to be understood, and to be loved. Connecting with yourself and going through this process helps fulfill those needs and connect you to a much larger picture and purpose.
I’d like to think of myself as an embodiment of unconditional love and helping others connect with that as well. Love is my language and that’s what makes me unique. I am flawed and do mess up as I’m still human after all; though I endeavor to be as understanding and loving as I possibly can be.
My hope is to leave the world a little bit better than how I found it, having helped and inspired as many people as I can along the way!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As a child, I was often told that I was “too loud,” “too much,” etc. Those phrases instilled such harsh and limiting beliefs in me from such a young age. I’m grateful for the lesson now, but at the time, it was heartbreaking, to say the least. Something I had to do was go underneath those phrases. Ask myself: what lays underneath this? why does this bother me? When I started to uncover and realize that I wasn’t any of those things that I am more than enough, the mantras I repeated to myself, really helped me understand who I was. It also helped me realize where others were coming from. That was important to learn. “hurt people hurt people.” It’s not an excuse, though it does help put things into perspective.
I had to unlearn what I wasn’t. What I was told who I was and then recreate who I wanted to be. Stepping into who you are and showing up as your authentic self, knowing that your insecurities and vulnerabilities are not weaknesses, but superpowers from which to derive strength, is the most powerful thing you can do for yourself!
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Without a shadow of a doubt. I honestly feel that in this lifetime, there is nothing else that I could be doing. It seems that at every turn and in every way, I was always being led down this path.
