We were lucky to catch up with Essence Enwere recently and have shared our conversation below.
Essence, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My first font was one of the most meaningful projects I have ever worked on. It is the font that started it all and has led me down the graphic & type design world. I have a deep passion and love for typography, and as I began in 2019 to find what my niche would be in the design world type stuck out to me. I saw a world of endless possibilities which meant for me an endless adventure. My first font was titled Monoline, a typeface inspired by sailor tattoos. Monoline has led me to make 15+ more fonts since then and I have no plan on stopping now.
Essence, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Essence Enwere I am a graphic designer, type fanatic, and book artist based in the Twin Cities. I’ve been designing fonts, drawing calligraphy, and creating hand lettering since my senior year of high school. The past few years have taught me so much about typography, and I’m looking forward to continuing to learn and grow! My aim is to broaden people’s understanding of typography and lettering. Lettering and type can convey a lot more than just what you read directly, type is an art that should be celebrated. My work includes traditional fonts, logos, and illustrative lettering. My sheer passion, work ethic, and willingness to learn always show through my work, I love type and the beauty of a letter.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is the process of creating. I love pushing my thinking, my creativity, and my technical skills to all new places & bounds. The process becomes therapeutic, rhythmic, and affirming. It affirms things I thought I could never do, it affirms my passion for being a maker and affirms my spirit by doing something I love. Every creation is a teaching moment and a more intimate way of learning how I think, why I love what I do, and what value art and design can to the world. The process tends to be more rewards than anything else for me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In terms of mission, I love my work to create conversation in understanding the beauty of the letter, typography, writing & communication. Typography has always been a silent hero of the human experience and to take that and use the shape of letters to develop narrative and representation sounds incredibly powerful. In terms of dreams, one of my biggest dreams is to design title sequences for film and television. Nothing feels more amazing to be sitting in the theatre and the fade from black is my typography filling the screen. Typography continues to be a vessel for my story telling and desire to communicate with folks deeply & I will never let that go.
