We recently connected with Essa Rose and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Essa, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Nature has a lot to show us about our place and identity in this world. During a trip back to my hometown in Malaysia, I noticed a full moon in the night sky. I was immediately drawn into the beam of the moonlight. The way the light quietly illuminates in darkness with a light that is unparalleled to the strength of the sun is a powerful reflection of feminity. It’s a symbol of grace and powerful gentleness, which contrasts the attributes of the sun, often referred to with the masculine pronoun (at least in stories I’ve read growing up). Recollections of my childhood memories began opening up a deeper discovery of the power in owning and embracing my feminity. I began reflecting on how I’ve been growing in my journey of maturity as a young woman. Society has a lot to say about what being a woman means, and I seek to portray the essence of femininity through the lens of my Christian faith combining wisdom I have gleaned from other women, of all backgrounds and beliefs. The songs were also written during a time when I was trying to break free from cycles of being in toxic relationships and uncovering my traumas, learning to let go and emerge with new confidence as the woman I am here to be.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always loved to sing. I asked my mum for singing lessons after watching a friend of mine performed on stage and knew I wanted to do the same thing. I was eight then, and started taking lessons. When we moved to Australia 3 years later, I picked up the violin because it sounded like a singing voice coming out of an instrument. I continued taking lessons throughout high school consistently for violin, but not so much for singing. After high school, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Music majoring in vocal performance because my dream of being a performing singer has never faded. During my study, my love of songwriting grew during the time spent composing music to perform with my band. After I released my first mini-album, I found my passion in health and beauty, as it so deeply resonates with the themes of my lyrics. I began creating my own perfumes with only natural essential oils. I started to share it with my close friends and they all loved it. I wanted to learn more about aromatherapy and potentially turning it into a business, so I decided to enrol myself into the Australian College of Aromatherapy for the Hollistic Aromatherapist Qualification. I want to merge themes of my music into the names of each perfume piece, where they can uplift the soul as they touch the physical body. I believe in the connection of the inner-world to the outer realm, and hope to contribute high-quality and unique beauty products that expresses natural timeless beauty.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Over the years, I learnt that the greatest commodity is not simply just time, but our attention. At the end of our life, we all hope to accomplish something and leave a legacy. But at the end of our life, all the different things to which we paid attention through our life will have been our life. What is within will eventually flow out, so don’t stress about hitting a milestone, but start with guarding your heart (Proverbs 4:23)

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think when you’re expressing yourself, you’re exercising the gift of life, and that itself is fulfilling. I’d like to think that every time I hone a craft, I not only finish with a sense of joy that something is born, but more that it can inspire others too. I get to also learn more about myself and connect with like-minded people. Music is powerful because it reaches the human soul without needing permission. I want to spread light in creating beauty that reflects our creator. That is the most rewarding part of being alive no matter what job you do.
