We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Esperanza Pope. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Esperanza below.
Esperanza, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The risk I’ve taken has been the biggest one ever; believing in myself. I had to take the risk and believe I can do it in order to reach my goals whether they’re career or personal. It doesn’t matter if anyone else believes in me, they’re not in control of my outcome, I am. If I listened to what others say about my decisions, I wouldn’t be reaching my goals. You have to do it whether you have the support or not, you have to do it scared and anxious but if you really want it, none of that will matter because you have so much faith in yourself that you make it no matter what. I recently moved back to the big city from a small city for more career opportunities and that decision has caused some discourse in my personal life but without that I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have now. I wouldn’t have the confidence I have now because I’ve seen I can trust myself to make these big life decisions.
Another risk is actually putting myself out there. It’s scary for sure because I’m opening myself up to so many types of people and situations, I don’t always know what to expect. But if you keep your cup close and never put it out there, it never has the chance to get filled. Putting myself and my art out there has been a risk but one of the most fulfilling ones because it has brought me so many opportunities.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve learned most of my skills just by doing them. Trial and error is the best way to learn in my opinion. From makeup to crochet and sewing, it’s all just been watching a YouTube video and then trying it for myself and adjusting so it fits what I’m looking for. I started watching makeup tutorials as a teenager and practicing any chance I could. I started posting videos on YouTube during my senior year and for a few years after along with an Instagram page shift to focus on my makeup more. Once TikTok was introduced, I started posting there. I’ve taken breaks here and there because sometimes other life gets in the way and you get redirected for a bit. I’ve been slowly posting shorts on my YouTube channel again and plan to post more videos like makeup tutorials or behind the scenes of projects I do. I plan to start putting together full sets for my projects including clothing and accessories handmade by myself and my partner. And that’s what my brand is, putting together sets for myself and/or others, including providing hair/makeup services myself because I am licensed and handmade pieces where I see fit. I’ll help you create whatever look you’re going for from a traditional glam to bold, out there and fantasy looks.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Helping people make their vision come to life. Seeing their faces light up as they see the product through the stages of creating it, seeing the sparkle in their eyes as they tell me what they want or how much they like what I’m doing. Helping people express themselves with my art is the most rewarding aspect of what I do.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve taken multiple breaks from my social media/artist career due to personal life getting in the way but, the fact that I always come back and keep posting and learning shows my resilience. I don’t give up because a post didn’t get a lot of likes or views, that’s not what I’m doing this for. I’m doing this because I love what I create and I want to share it with anyone who’d be interested. When you really want something, you won’t let anything stand in the way of you and your goal even if it’s yourself.
