We were lucky to catch up with Esha Herbert-Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Esha, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
Starting this year, we will be donating a percentage of our profits to organizations that uplift, support and serve black women. I’m passionate about providing support to our women because we need it the most. As the emotional caregivers of our world, we tend to be overlooked as a demographic that needs support. When we are fully supported as women, we thrive and in turn support other women. Supporting black women is a cause that benefits everyone.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Canada with parents from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, and I’m currently living in NC with my husband and son. I have an extensive professional background in Human Resources and event planning. I’m also an international best-selling author! After dimming my light for several unsuccessful relationships, I met my husband at Trinidad Carnival in 2006. After a devastating loss in 2015, I went full time in my multiple 6-figure business, Events by Ashé, where we plan Caribbean Carnival experiences. I Started the Carnivalista Lifestyle brand in 2017 with my book of the same name (here’s the link to it on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Carnivalista-Lifestyle-Self-Development-Professionals-Entrepreneurs/dp/1949513068), dedicated to black women being their true, authentic selves through amazing travel.
Having worn several masks throughout my life, I work with women to remove their masks and give them a safe space to do this with the right support. I’m known to be a great planner, having this experience for over 2 decades. I am especially proud of being a woman who has overcome many obstacles to build a thriving business and a loving support system of fram-a-lay (friends and family) around me. Incorporating this into my brand to show other women that this is possible for them too, makes me very proud. Right now, I’m working on the HabitShift365 mentoring program and it is set to be launched in June! This intensive program will show women how to overcome anything with a plan, a system and the right support.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
My business is completely self funded. I used what I already had when I got started: a laptop and a cell phone.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I actually don’t have a large social media presence for Carnivalista Lifestyle, as I just started building this in 2023.
If I had any advice for anyone starting to build a social media presence, I would say to be consistent. Consistency will make any marketing tactic “work” for your business. The other thing I would say is don’t solely rely on social media to build your business since you don’t own the platform. You need a variety of marketing tactics to consistently get clients. The marketing tactics I’ve focused on are: SEO presence, email marketing, strategic partnerships, referrals, media and blogging/vlogging.
