We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eryn Vargo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Eryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability in the digital media world is people undervaluing what we do. This platform is my small business, my paycheck and my contribution to supporting my family.
Most companies that want to advertise with us, devalue what we offer, who we reach and what goes into it.
PR agencies pitch us for free media placement all day long, and while we do in-kind media placements for non-profits, we can not give it all away. My time goes into publishing, editing and creating.
Our audience is over 1,000,000 local women a year…that is worth something! We work with BIG brands and businesses giving us proof of concept AND credibility in the industry.
If advertisers and the businesses that want to work with us realize that we offer lots of value on a hyper local level, then they would not undercut or devalue our fees. That would lead to profitability in the industry!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Orlando Mom Collective, a hyperlocal, digital media platform that connects local parents with local resources and businesses to inspire a more connected, joyful parenting journey across Central Florida suburbia. www.OrlandoMom.com
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
COVID. The epitome of pivoting in business. We had to un-do ALL of the traditional methods we used to talk to and reach out audience.
Deeper, more meaningful connections we fostered, and events took on a new shape.
We learned, we adapted and we thrived.
Being OPEN to pivoting is the key. Don’t hold on to “the way” you always do or did things. Go with the flow and try new things.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is hard. The key inconsistency and connecting. Post and share regularly and TALK to your audience! Connect with the people that are raving, loyal fans.
