Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Creativity doesn’t operate on a 9-to-5 schedule. Many creatives, like yourself, find that inspiration strikes at less conventional times, such as late at night. This is a natural rhythm for many in the creative fields, where the quiet of the night can spur thoughts and ideas that are stifled during the bustle of the day. It’s crucial for non-creatives to understand that this kind of work often doesn’t always conform to traditional business hours. My best ideas come when I’m driving, taking a shower, or literally anywhere I can’t write down an idea :)
Additionally, the process of being creative isn’t always about producing something tangible. Sometimes, it involves activities that might seem unproductive to an outsider, like taking a walk or simply daydreaming. These moments are not about escaping work but are an essential part of the creative process. They allow for mental decluttering and space for new ideas to seed and grow. The best creative work often stems from giving the mind the freedom to explore and wander.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn in my journey with EGC was to trust my own vision over the projections of others, no matter how expert they might seem. When I started my business, I relied heavily on the advice of business coaches and industry experts. They seemed to have the success that I aspired to, so naturally, I believed they knew best. They advised me on what would sell and what wouldn’t, guiding me to tailor my services to fit a mold they deemed successful.
For years, I followed their directions, but this led me away from what I truly wanted to create. I was building a business that didn’t feel authentic to me, and it was exhausting. I wasn’t just losing my passion; I was burning out.
Over the last year, I’ve shifted back to building the business I always envisioned, one that truly reflects my values and vision. This shift not only reignited my passion but also resonated well with my clients. It turns out what I had to offer was exactly what people wanted. My clients are happier, and so am I. Rediscovering the joy in my work has been transformative.
The lesson here was that while external advice can be valuable, it should not overshadow your own instincts and aspirations. Success is deeply personal and often non-linear, and authenticity plays a crucial role in creating a business that is both fulfilling and sustainable. This journey back to the roots of my initial vision has taught me the importance of aligning my business practices with my personal values and the core of what EGC stands for. It’s a lesson in trusting your inner compass over the chorus of outside voices, a lesson that has fundamentally changed how I approach my business and my role within it.
