We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Errol Sack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Errol thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
There really is nothing I feel I could off done different. My interest of being in the film business came at a very young age. I feel one of the best things i did when I was younger was learning how to play the guitar. This helped me with patience for everything I wanted to learn.I defiantly had a lot of optuninites to learn about film making in all realms . I really got to play in the professional parts of filming . I got to be in the special fx department where I learn a lot about explosions, squibing, making rain, making things work in a quick time .I even worked as a water truck driver for awhile doing wet downs and putting out fires . doing this job gave me the chance to watch big directors make movies .during all of this my acting was very slow and I tried numerous things , I was going on tons of auditions and failed to get jobs . So I started working with acting coaches to find out what I was doing wrong , after a few years of that I started booking lots of commercials then a few years later I started booking tv shows and while doing this I was making short films and feature films . My first feature was a fail.Boy did I learn a lot though. The main Thing That I have learned for everything in the business is that if its acting or being the director , Everything has to be perfect and the more perfect you can make your character the better chance you have . As far a making a film , well you need all the pieces to be the best you can make it
Errol , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have learn a lot of everything .MAGIC,RACING CARS,PYRO TECHNICIAN,MINITURE BUILDER,CAMERA OPERATOR,DIRECTING,LIGHTING ,BOOKKEEPING, PLAYING GUITAR,BEING AN EMPLOYER . The biggest thing is to never loose sight of your dream and be patient and be ready , you might only get one chance to proof your self and being ready is really important
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When finishing any project its a huge reward . its a great feeling even if the film is not good . its more about completing and moving on to the next one
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I feel that for starters . you need thick skin . there will be a lot of thoughts form people that you won’t agree with , but is important to listen to what people have to say .its better for me for someone to tell me what I did wrong that how amazing my film is …I learn more from the viewer after all they are watching it
