We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Errol Fritz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Errol below.
Alright, Errol thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Yes. One-hundred percent of the time actually. I basically wake up in the morning, pour myself some coffee and feel the curse of misunderstanding. I can’t think of one specific incident, there’s just too many. Being a lone-wolf is enough for humans to snub anyone it seems. The San Diego scene is very much in their comfort zone. The community will preserve its mellow nature at all costs. To the people who run this town, my art is viewed as a direct threat to the culture (or lack thereof). There’s only a couple of venues and promoters who will give someone like me or New Skeletal Faces the time of day. People pigeonhole us into categories we’re not: “You’re a goth band, they can’t play with metal bands” or “You’re a metal band, you can’t play with goth bands” etc. What’s with the self-righteous label segregation amongst those who know nothing? The money-mongering business types promote this mentality, and society blindly follows. But don’t get me wrong, ALOT of people want what we’re doing. The elite will just not allow it. Currently, the public clings to the fabricated industry standard more than ever. But deep down, they want something refreshing. They just don’t know it yet.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Errol Fritz is my name. Yes, it’s my real name. Currently the vocalist/guitarist of New Skeletal Faces. I’ve been in other bands such as They Feed At Night and Bell Tower Bats. I’m a self taught musician and artist. So far being in NSF, I’ve designed the art and created most of our videos. The records we’ve released have been on our own terms. No help from a label, and we’ve sold tons. We’re self-motivated. DIY at its core. Other than that, most people know nothing about me. I’m basically an alien to them. In a lot of ways, they’re not wrong.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Put the art above all. I see a declining interest in genuine artistic expression. It all seems like a popularity contest now. We need to give REAL artists a platform, and dismantle the fear of repercussions.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives are the ones who struggle the most to understand. That’s kind of the problem. Our society doesn’t promote creativity. We’ve been taught to fear it. There’s a lot of distractions with technology and bombardment of useless information. Like I said previously, people deep down crave originality. They just don’t realize it yet.
