We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ernest Tate. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ernest below.
Hi Ernest, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
When I started Tate’s School of Fitness, it didn’t begin with a detailed business plan—it began with a passion for helping people improve their health, confidence, and quality of life through fitness.
As a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, I spent years working with individuals who wanted to lose weight, improve athletic performance, or simply become healthier. Over time, I realized that many people were not just looking for workouts; they needed education, accountability, and a supportive environment. That realization sparked the idea for Tate’s School of Fitness.
The first step was figuring out whether I could turn that idea into a real business. I spent time researching the fitness industry, identifying my target audience, and thinking about what would make my approach different. I wanted the business to focus on teaching fitness principles and healthy habits rather than simply providing workouts.
Once I committed to the idea, I started working on the foundation. I chose a business name, researched licensing requirements, registered the business, and began developing a vision and mission statement. I also had to learn about areas that weren’t part of my fitness background, such as business planning, marketing, budgeting, and customer acquisition.
In the early days, I wore every hat imaginable. I was the trainer, marketer, customer service representative, scheduler, and accountant. I created training programs, designed flyers, built a social media presence, and talked to anyone willing to listen about the services I offered. Many evenings were spent learning how to promote a business, create professional documents, and manage finances.
One of the biggest challenges was building credibility and attracting clients. I focused on delivering exceptional service to every client I worked with. Word-of-mouth referrals became one of the most powerful growth tools. As clients achieved results, they shared their experiences with friends and family, helping the business grow organically.
As the months progressed, I refined my systems. I developed client assessment processes, created structured training programs, implemented scheduling and tracking tools, and established policies that helped the business operate more professionally. Each improvement made the organization stronger and allowed me to focus more on coaching and less on administrative tasks.
Over the years, Tate’s School of Fitness evolved beyond personal training. It became a platform for promoting health education, youth fitness, athletic development, and community wellness. The business taught me that entrepreneurship is not one big leap but a series of small, consistent actions. Every step—from researching the idea to registering the business, finding clients, refining services, and building systems—helped transform a passion for fitness into a sustainable organization.
Looking back, the journey from idea to execution was less about having all the answers from the beginning and more about being willing to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward. Each challenge provided an opportunity to grow both as a business owner and as a coach, ultimately shaping Tate’s School of Fitness into the organization it is today.

Ernest, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the founder and owner of Tate’s School of Fitness, a health and wellness organization dedicated to helping individuals improve their physical fitness, athletic performance, and overall quality of life. Fitness has been a passion of mine for more than two decades, and what began as a personal commitment to health and performance evolved into a mission to help others discover their own strength, confidence, and potential.
What makes my story unique is that my journey into fitness was born from personal transformation. At my heaviest, I weighed 553 pounds. Through years of dedication, discipline, education, and perseverance, I lost over 300 pounds and completely transformed my life. That experience gave me firsthand insight into the physical, mental, and emotional challenges that many people face when trying to improve their health. I understand the struggles because I have lived them. My personal journey serves as a daily reminder that meaningful change is possible regardless of where you start.
I entered the fitness industry because I saw firsthand how exercise can transform lives. Throughout my career, I have worked with people from all walks of life, including youth athletes, adults looking to improve their health, individuals seeking weight loss, and those pursuing higher levels of athletic performance. I recognized that many people struggle not because they lack motivation, but because they lack guidance, support, and a structured plan. Tate’s School of Fitness was created to bridge that gap.
Our services focus on personal training, strength and conditioning, sports performance coaching, youth fitness development, running and endurance training, and wellness education. As a certified USATF Level 1 Coach, I have a special passion for helping runners and endurance athletes improve their performance while reducing their risk of injury. We work with athletes looking to improve speed, strength, and agility, as well as individuals who simply want to move better, feel healthier, and build sustainable fitness habits. We also emphasize injury prevention, mobility, and long-term health rather than quick fixes or short-term solutions.
What sets Tate’s School of Fitness apart is our commitment to meeting people where they are. Every client has different goals, abilities, and life circumstances. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, we create personalized programs designed around the individual’s needs and aspirations. We focus on education, accountability, and empowerment so that clients not only achieve results but also understand how to maintain those results for years to come.
As a coach, athlete, and lifelong student of health and performance, I combine evidence-based training methods with practical experience. My background in strength and conditioning, youth development, endurance sports, and wellness coaching allows me to serve a diverse range of clients. Whether someone is preparing for a sport, recovering from inactivity, training for a race, or working toward a healthier lifestyle, my goal is to provide the tools and support they need to succeed.
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is not only losing over 300 pounds but also using that experience to inspire and guide others. Seeing clients lose weight, improve their health markers, gain confidence, complete races they once thought impossible, or earn athletic opportunities through improved performance is incredibly rewarding. Those success stories are the true measure of our work.
Beyond fitness, our mission is to build stronger people and stronger communities. We believe that physical fitness can serve as a foundation for discipline, resilience, leadership, and personal growth. As we continue to grow, I am especially passionate about expanding opportunities for youth fitness, sports performance training, running programs, and community wellness initiatives.
The main thing I want people to know about Tate’s School of Fitness is that we genuinely care about the success of every individual we serve. Our brand is built on integrity, education, encouragement, and results. We are committed to helping people become healthier, stronger, and more confident versions of themselves, regardless of where they begin their journey. Fitness is not just about exercise—it’s about creating a lifestyle that empowers people to reach their fullest potential.
My story is proof that transformation is possible. If a man who once weighed 553 pounds can lose over 300 pounds, become a coach, complete endurance events, and dedicate his life to helping others, then extraordinary change is available to anyone willing to take the first step.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn was the belief that being a great coach automatically makes you a successful business owner.
When I first started my fitness business, I focused almost entirely on helping people get results. I spent countless hours creating workouts, coaching athletes, and supporting clients. I assumed that if I worked hard and delivered great service, the business side would take care of itself.
What I learned the hard way is that running a successful business requires a completely different skill set. Marketing, sales, budgeting, client retention, systems, and leadership are just as important as coaching expertise. There were times when I was working long hours, helping clients achieve their goals, but still struggling to grow the business because I wasn’t paying enough attention to the operational side.
The turning point came when I started treating Tate’s School of Fitness like a business instead of just a passion project. I invested time in learning sales, customer service, business planning, and building processes that could scale beyond me personally.
The lesson I had to unlearn was that passion alone is enough. Passion is important, but sustainable success comes from combining passion with strategy, systems, and continuous learning. That mindset shift has helped me become a better entrepreneur, leader, and coach for the people I serve.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with clients through a combination of personal communication, consistent follow-up, and community engagement. I regularly connect with clients through phone calls, text messages, email newsletters, social media platforms, and fitness apps to provide workout guidance, motivation, and progress updates.
To foster brand loyalty, I focus on building genuine relationships and delivering consistent value. I celebrate client milestones, recognize achievements, provide personalized fitness recommendations, and check in regularly to ensure clients stay on track toward their goals. I also create a supportive fitness community by organizing group workouts, fitness challenges, educational workshops, and wellness events that encourage accountability and connection.
Additionally, I actively seek client feedback and use it to improve programs and services. By maintaining open communication, demonstrating a genuine interest in each client’s success, and consistently delivering high-quality coaching and support, I have been able to build long-term relationships and a loyal client base that trusts the Tate’s School of Fitness brand.
