We were lucky to catch up with Erin Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A year ago I left my well-paying full time job with a company I had been with since moving to Savannah in 2009 to start my own physical therapy business. I was terrified but at the same time thrilled. I never thought that I would open my own company, I have been a staff PT for over 25 years. I was slowly losing my love for the profession, however, and I decided that either I would see and treat clients on my own terms or I would leave PT altogether. I was that burnt out. It has not been easy in this first year! I have to hustle and grind daily to promote myself and the business. This is way outside of my comfort zone but I know doing hard things is the only was to grow as an individual. My business is slowly expanding and I continue to develop my niche- working with runners.
Erin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Young Physical Therapy and Wellness is a concierge PT clinic where all treatments are 1:1. I provide custom and individualized care and spend as much time as needed with clients. It is a cash-based practice (meaning out of network for all insurances) focusing on orthopedics and wellness services and I specialize in working with runners. I offer gait analysis and run readiness assessments to assist runners in improving form, strength and helping to stay injury free. Other services provided are dry needling, blow flow restriction training, manual therapy, corrective exercise, vestibular rehab, and post surgical recovery. I sublease my space from Drew Edmonds, owner of FIT GYM on Wilmington Island, and use this amazing private gym for all exercise and rehab needs. I am always available by phone or text, even on weekends! I encourage my clients to reach out for questions and concerns and to keep me posted on how they are doing.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Most of my clients have come to me by word of mouth. I believe in Physical Therapy this is the absolute best way. People are more likely to seek out a particular provider if they know someone who has had a great experience and outcome with that PT. By providing excellent care and outstanding patient support growth happens as more and more clients tell their friends about me. I also have developed a rapport with local running stores and run clubs by providing free injury screens and talks pertaining to injury prevention to help grow this side of my business.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think by being present at local races, running clubs and stores has helped me grow my reputation as a PT that specializes in treating runners. I have a tent and bring my treatment table to offer free services during the Expo events the day prior to the race and then again on race day. It really has been so much fun to meet people from all over the country at these runs! I want to provide value and education to people and this has been a great way to get out there.
