We were lucky to catch up with Erin Yoo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue acing professionally when I watched the musical ‘Mamma Mia’ in broadway with my mom. ‘Mamma Mia’ has always been our favorite movie when I was growing up. My mom would play the songs from the movie almost every morning before I went to school. I would get ready listening to the songs and I would never forget that special feeling in the early morning when she was brushing my hair and we would sing along to all the songs. When we finally got to the see the musical in broadway after I grew up, I still remember how happy that experience made both of us feel and I wanted to get into acting professionally right after.

Erin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up I had severe skin condition called ‘eczema’. It was all over my body and face. I always loved talking in front of people, loved doing presentations, but when my eczema got worse I slowly became more introverted and I struggled with social anxiety. I still tried to do whatever I can by participating in school activities but I could never do anything above that. Knowing that I was interested in acting and wanted to pursue theater but I had to kind of shove that dream away because I felt ashamed. I knew with my skin condition I could never become an actor. Very fortunately my skin condition slowly improved and that’s when I really pushed myself to pursue my dream. I still get rashes easily and I still have that fear of my skin getting worse but I am so happy and glad I didn’t give up on my dream. Now I am confident that even if my skin condition comes back I will never give up stop chasing what I want to do and what I love.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My community is so important to me. As an asian actor, as a Korean actor, bringing Asian community to Hollywood and building that community is my biggest goal in my creative journey. I hope and wish to bring more cultural awareness to Hollywood.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an actor there are so many rewarding aspects while creating and crafting your art. When people enjoy your movie, when people connect with you through your character, or when the audience just simply feel better after watching your work. All of that inspire me and motivate me deeply as an actor. But one of the most rewarding aspects has to be when I bring awareness to the audience through my work.
