We recently connected with Erin Turco and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Our mission at EVT Consulting is to provide exceptional, detail-oriented, and compliance focused bookkeeping services to businesses in all industries. We are committed to delivering accurate and timely financial solutions but also fostering the growth of the bookkeeping profession. By prioritizing education and hands-on training, we aim to create a stronger, more capable network of financial professionals, empowering our team and clients alike. We believe that through continuous education and development, we can build a more proficient, transparent, and trusted financial industry.
In addition to this primary mission, I also have a mission to create a work environment that is suitable and supportive of professionals that may not fit into a traditional corporate environment. As a disabled business owner myself, I found that working a 9 to 5 was an incredible strain on my body and mind. The stress of being committed to a strict schedule and managing my own expectations alongside my employer’s needs was a major trigger for my physical symptoms.
I started this company as a one-woman show to fill the gaps in my income when I needed to switch my employment to part time due to medical procedures and treatments. The ability to manage my own time and work when and how my body allowed was a huge game-changer for me. It allowed me to grow in my business and thrive in my life. While I still have disabilities, flare ups, and setbacks, I have the ability to flex with my own needs and still get things done, without compromising the quality of work that is being put out. With this growth, I have established a business that will allow other people in my situation to thrive in a business and industry that they may not have though possible.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I fell into accounting by complete accident. Once I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, I began to look for career options that would suit my needs as a new wife and mother. I made a choice to attend college and complete a business program, which I thought it would be useful in many different settings. When I took the required accounting classes I immediately fell in love! I am a detail-oriented person, love solving problems, and organizing data is such a satisfactory process for me. I soon switched my major to accounting. During my college education, I was lucky enough to find an employer that trusted me to help with her company’s bookkeeping and remained with her family of businesses for nearly ten years. Learning on the job, while also completing my two accounting degrees gave me a huge upper hand in understanding and applying everything that I had learned.
I’m incredibly proud of the challenges I’ve overcome in my journey to becoming a business owner. Over the last decade, I’ve been diagnosed with a dozen chronic and lifelong conditions, undergone seven surgeries, participated in medical research, and tried countless treatments to improve my quality of life. Despite these obstacles, I managed to maintain employment and eventually build a thriving business. It’s been a tough and rewarding journey, and each challenge has only made me more resilient and determined to succeed.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Networking, Networking, Networking! 100% of my clients come from referrals, and I do not advertise or market in any form other than maintaining a social media presence. Keeping myself involved, visible, and communicating with other local businesses has been essential to my growth. Not only does it help bring in clients, but it allows me to create a community of like-minded business owners that I can support as well. I firmly believe in the philosophy of ‘if I can’t help you, I can connect you with someone who can.’ Building a network of trusted referral partners across both business and personal needs allows me to better serve my clients and community. This approach not only helps me provide solutions beyond my own services but also strengthens relationships by ensuring that clients always have access to the support they need.

Any advice for managing a team?
I am new to being an employer, but I have been an employee since I was sixteen. I have worked in a wide range of industries under many different management styles and personalities which has allowed me to really form an idea of the type of employer I would like to be. First and foremost, my goal is to create a flexible, supportive, and positive work environment while still maintaining productivity and quality of work. This is a tough balance, but having employees that you trust to get the job done is so important. Clearly defining expectations, and having regular check-ins reduces the risk of miscommunication and gives us time to celebrate the things that are going well.
