Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erin Stefanik. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
From film to digital, my love for photography has always been a constant. Growing up, I was always the one with a camera in hand—waiting anxiously for film to develop at Walgreens and Wolf Camera, then embracing the instant gratification of digital. So when I launched my business in February 2010 no one was surprised. I started with a Facebook Page, and the bookings came instantly—referrals upon referrals. Now, 15 years later, I’m still capturing memories for some of the very first clients who trusted me on day one. It’s been an incredible journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
One thing you may not know about me, Erin Stefanik, is that my photography journey started long before my business did. Ever since I was a little kid, I was the one with a camera in hand—grade school, middle school, high school, and even the photo editor in my college newspaper for 4 years at Loras College, always capturing moments. That passion turned into a career 15 years ago, and I’ve never looked back.
What I provide to my clients goes beyond just great photos—I offer a top-tier experience. My clients love that I go above and beyond for them, whether that means scouting hidden gem locations for the perfect outdoor shoot or guiding them to bring out their best, most natural selves in front of the camera. I specialize in luxury brand headshots, as well as weddings and family photography, making sure every session is personal, fun, and full of life.
One thing I always tell my clients is, “You don’t need to know how to pose—that’s my job.” So many people walk into a session feeling unsure, but I take that pressure off of them. I guide every step of the way, making sure they feel comfortable, confident, and completely themselves. By the end of the shoot, they walk out feeling empowered—and I make sure that confidence shines through in their photos.
What sets me apart? Experience and intuition. Having been in the industry for so long, I know how to truly listen to my clients, understand their vision, and deliver results that not only challenge me creatively but also inspire me. I don’t just take pictures—I tell stories, capturing personalities in a way that makes each image stand out.
One of the things I’m most proud of in my business is that after 15 years, I’m still going strong—and honestly, I feel like I’m just getting started. Lately, I’ve really found my niche in branding and headshot photography, and it’s been exciting to refine my style and elevate my brand.
For anyone considering working with me, here’s what I want you to know: my goal is to help you stand out. Whether it’s a headshot, a branding session, or a family shoot, I make sure your personality shines through every image. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about feeling confident, authentic, and truly seen.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivotal moment in my business came in 2016 when I became pregnant with my son. That year was the busiest of my career—I had 16 weddings on the books, along with countless family sessions, headshots, and other shoots. Balancing a growing business while preparing for motherhood was a challenge, but it also taught me some of the most valuable lessons about time management, boundaries, and prioritizing what truly matters.
After becoming a mom, I had to completely rethink how I structured my day-to-day business. I adjusted my office hours, streamlined my workflow, and became much more intentional with my time—both in my work and with my family. It was no longer about squeezing in as much as possible; it was about working smarter, not harder.
This shift didn’t just benefit me personally—it also made me a better photographer and business owner. I became more efficient, more present with my clients, and more focused on delivering a top-tier experience without burnout. Now, nearly a decade later, I still carry those lessons with me. Finding the balance between running a successful business and being a present mom is an ongoing journey, but it’s one that has shaped me in the best way possible.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has always been referrals. There’s nothing more rewarding than clients who not only return year after year but also send their family, friends, and colleagues my way. I have families who trust me to capture their milestones annually and corporate clients who call me every time they bring in a new team member for updated branding and headshots.
It’s those long-term relationships that mean the most—knowing that my clients have had such an incredible experience that they continue to choose me and share my work with others. Referrals aren’t just business growth; they’re a testament to the trust and connection I build with my clients. Every time someone says, “You have to work with Erin,” it’s the biggest honor and the best compliment I could ever receive.
