Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erin Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents, Pamela and Mike Jackson, have been a constant source of unwavering support and encouragement throughout my life. One of the greatest things they did right was instilling in me the belief that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Whether it was signing me up for singing lessons (despite the fact that I’m not exactly Grammy material), encouraging me to write, supporting my attempts at learning guitar, or even standing by me as I embarked on the challenging journey of starting my nonprofit, The Jonathan Brown Mental Health Foundation, they’ve always been in my corner.
A story that perfectly illustrates this is when I first decided to start my nonprofit. I was overwhelmed with self-doubt, unsure if I had what it took to bring my vision to life. During one of my many moments of frustration, I called my mom to vent, and she listened patiently, as always. When I finished, my dad chimed in with his trademark calmness and said, “You got this, you’re going to change so many lives, and you have the personal experience to do so.” That conversation didn’t just calm my nerves; it reignited my determination.
Their belief in me has shaped my journey, teaching me the value of perseverance and the power of having a strong support system. I’ve carried their encouragement into my career and my nonprofit work, and I’m forever grateful for the foundation they’ve built for me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Erin the founder of The Jonathan Brown Mental Health Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing accessible and culturally competent mental health services to underserved communities, particularly BIPOC individuals, with a focus on Black women and girls. My journey into this field is deeply personal, shaped by my own experiences with mental health challenges, and it’s driven by a desire to ensure no one feels alone or unsupported in their struggles.
Our foundation collaborates with Banner Health, whose mental health services include medication and a variety of therapies. Through this partnership, we address the critical insurance gap, ensuring that individuals in need can access these life-changing services without worrying about how to pay for them. By covering costs for those who might otherwise go without care, we’re breaking down barriers and making healing possible for everyone.
What sets us apart is our commitment to cultural competence and our focus on meeting people where they are, both emotionally and financially. I’m most proud of the lives we’ve helped transform and the hope we’ve restored in the process. For anyone learning about us, know that The Jonathan Brown Mental Health Foundation exists to ensure that no one has to navigate mental health challenges alone or without support. We’re here to help, to uplift, and to make a lasting impact.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge, resilience and empathy are key to succeeding in the nonprofit sector, especially in mental health advocacy. Resilience helps you push through challenges like securing funding and addressing systemic barriers, while empathy fosters trust and genuine connections with those you serve.
Any advice for managing a team?
Managing a nonprofit means focusing on self-discipline and finding ways to stay motivated. Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small, and acknowledge the impact of your work-it’s important for morale, even if it’s just your own.
When collaborating with partners, volunteers, or supporters, foster clear communication and gratitude to build strong relationships. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network can also help you stay inspired and maintain energy for your mission. Ultimately, staying connected to your purpose is key to keeping morale high and driving your work forward.
