We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erin Hughes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
The biggest lesson I learned was while working in property management for a local real estate firm. I discovered the true essence of a positive work environment – a lesson that goes beyond spreadsheets and sales figures. It was within the vibrant “work happy” culture, where the joy of realtors and fellow employees resonated, that I grasped the profound impact of finding joy in both the work itself and the people around you.
The owner of the brokerage firm became, not just a mentor but a guiding force in shaping my journey. She provided me with opportunities that extended beyond the confines of the office, teaching me not just about business but about the art of genuine connection. It was under her influence that I not only learned to interact effectively with people but also discovered a profound love for the work I was doing, eventually leading me to take the leap into starting my own real estate photography business.
During my nearly four years in the real estate realm, I connected with countless realtors and property managers. Little did I know that each interaction was subtly crafting the path toward owning my own venture. This journey emphasized that personal and professional growth is a continuous process – an evolution that never truly reaches a final destination, regardless of one’s perceived expertise.
I also gleaned the wisdom that there will always be someone more accomplished, prompting the realization that giving myself grace is an integral part of the journey. Above all, the most poignant lesson was discovering that when your work aligns with your passion, it transforms into a source of perpetual joy – a sentiment that blurs the lines between work and a labor of love.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Absolutely! I’m Erin Hughes and my journey into the art of photography began in high school. Initially drawn in by a senior year photography class, this love evolved into a college pursuit, though immediate success proved elusive. Despite a decade filled with remedial jobs, I was still able to get a few side jobs here and there taking family photos and photographing weddings. The turning point, however, came when I landed a role at a local real estate company.
In the heart of the real estate world, I was able to grow connections with realtors, sparking a specialization in real estate photography. What sets me apart, I believe, is a unique blend of capturing captivating spaces and preserving cherished family moments. Beyond family photography and professional headshots, I also offer virtual tours of spaces and will soon be adding drone photography.
I’d like to think that I don’t just take photos, that I also solve problems. For real estate clients, it’s about showcasing properties in their best light. For families – their treasured moments frozen in time, and professionals who seek an image that mirrors their success. With an eye for detail and a passion for storytelling, I try to craft visual narratives that stand out.
In a world saturated with images, I want to bring a distinctive touch – a fusion of real estate expertise, family warmth, and cutting-edge technology.
I take immense pride in being the first in my immediate family to venture into entrepreneurship, owning my own business. Reflecting on the past decade, the realization that I now set my schedule and am my own boss is still surreal. A journey I never foresaw, but every challenge along the way prepared me for this pivotal moment. As a small-town girl who never imagined such heights, I want people to know that life’s difficulties served as the catalyst for inspiration. Each obstacle became a stepping stone, shaping not only who I am but the art I create. I am genuinely grateful to wake up every day, infusing that inspiration into my work and sharing it with my clients. Life’s unexpected turns have shaped my path, and I am excited to share this journey with those who connect with my story.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My side hustle evolved into my main career, and it’s been an incredible journey. I dedicated six years to studying art and photography, and during that time, I pursued my passion on the side, capturing weddings, family moments, and high school senior photos. Remarkably, every job I secured was through word of mouth – no advertising or marketing.
The turning point came when the demand for my work skyrocketed, necessitating the acquisition of a business license. While obtaining a license might seem like a small milestone to some, for me, it was pivotal. It marked the transition from a side gig to a full-fledged career. The key to the growth lay in delivering quality work that spoke for itself, fostering client satisfaction and earning their referrals. Each new project became a stepping stone, propelling me to where I am today – running a thriving photography business born out of passion and dedication.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Hands down, word of mouth every time. When you treat your clients with kindness, respect and as though you’ve been friends for years, people remember that.
