We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erin Duvall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Erin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on has been the creation and continuation of my foundation, Twice the Love Foundation. ‘Twice the Love Foundation’ focuses on the social, emotional, and financial stressors of being a single parent and helping those who need assistance get back on their feet again.
I created the foundation for single parents, both men and women alike, after experiencing firsthand the effects of a one-parent family. When I moved back home in 2016, I was very fortunate to have a loving place to land while going through my divorce; however, I know that many single parents do not find this support on their journey.
One thing that is absolute is that it takes a village—a village that welcomes you with open arms and provides encouragement and help for single parents and their children. In a one-parent household, you provide twice the love to your children and are lucky to receive twice the love as well.
We had a very successful initial year and are currently working on our second annual event that once again benefits The Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas, TX. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 13th, at the Potter Rose Performance Hall in the ATTPAC District. Tickets will go live on Monday, January 8th.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi everyone! My name is Erin Duvall, and I am a singer, songwriter, mother and entrepreneur. I grew up in a large family in Dallas, TX, as the fourth of five children. I have two very wonderful parents who taught us at an early age the importance of hard work and giving back. Every aspect of my life since I was a little girl has been based around being a performer. I was always writing songs in my journal, blaring Dolly Parton or Shania Twain, and putting on shows for anyone that would listen.
My younger years were full of performing, from being the lead in the high school musical to captaining the cheerleading squad. I took a pause to go to college at the University of Texas and majored in journalism, where I really honed in on my craft of writing. Immediately after college, I went straight back to music and have had quite the journey along the way: from children’s music to my music, from New York to Nashville to the West Coast, then back to Texas, to becoming a mother and writing this new album. It’s been a long and winding road. One that has always been centered on music. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my love of music and all the fabulous places it has taken me along the way to get to where I am now.
Currently, we are working on a multitude of projects. For starters, my full album, One by One, drops on February 9th, and I am so excited for everyone to hear the project in its entirety. The second annual Twice the Love Foundation event will be on February 13th in Dallas, TX, and I have many more exciting items to share very soon!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think one of the most rewarding aspects of being creative is that we take these tiny ideas from our minds, this little seed, and then provide that idea with structure to then watch it flourish into something big and wonderful. The journey from a small idea and a melody to a beautifully finished song to a major production on stage to visually represent the song is such a magical process and the most rewarding to me as an artist.
As a songwriter, I also find it very rewarding to write through my emotions. To be able to put my thoughts on a page and delicately weave a melody into them not only allows freedom but also, in some ways, provides closure if needed.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
After going through my divorce, I decided it was now or never. So I dove head first back into my creative journey at high velocity. I am a single mother of four children, and leaving a legacy behind for my children is the biggest driving force in my life.
