We recently connected with Erin Duvall and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Thank you so much for having me! Yes, absolutely! I would not be where I am today without my parents guidance, love and support. I have two very wonderful parents who taught us at an early age the importance of hard work and giving back. They are truly inspirational and my desire to pay it forward where I can derived from them. They are the two hardest working people I know and they do it with the utmost grace. They are about to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary, so not only are they my icons as parents and entrepreneurs, but they are the greatest example of love. So blessed to call them Mom and Dad.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I grew up in a large family in Dallas, TX as the fourth of five children. I was always the performer. Perhaps it was because there were a lot of us, so I was finding ways to stand out, but I truly believe I was born this way. I came out singing and dancing from day one.
Every aspect of my life growing up was around being a performer, from being the leads in the high school musical to captain on the cheerleading squad.
I have wanted to be a performer since I was a little girl. I was always writing songs in my journal, blaring Dolly Parton or Shania Twain, and putting on shows for anyone that would listen.
My younger years were full of performing and then I took a pause to go to college at The University of Texas and majored in journalism, where I really honed in on my craft of writing. Immediately after college I went straight back to music and have had quite the journey along the way: from children’s music to my music, from New York to Nashville to the West Coast then back to Texas, to becoming a mother of four and writing this new album, it’s been a a long and winding road. One that has always been centered on music. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my love of music and all the fabulous places it has taken me along the way to get to where I am now.
I have lots of fun projects coming out in the spring and can’t wait to share all of them with you!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a single mother with four children requires a tremendous amount of resilience. Being a mother is the greatest blessing of my life and my children are my everything. Everyday you have to choose to get up, put on that brave face, handle the important matters, let the small stuff slide off your back, be present for your children, be accountable for yourself and your family and make sure that you are personally centered and grounded so you can be the best version of yourself for everyone that needs you. It requires an enormous amount of resilience and I am grateful that I have always been up for a challenge. I am also grateful that I have allowed painful experiences to provide a space for me to grow as a person, a mother, a friend, a daughter, an artist. My resiliency is a large part of who I am and what I am able to provide to the world through my music and other various projects.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely! My children are my world and everything I do, I do for them. So first and foremost, it is to leave a legacy behind for them and to always make them proud. And secondly, I want to spread as much kindness into the world as I possibly can and pay it forward wherever and whenever I can. If you are given a platform, you have a choice what to do with it, and I choose to spread light.
