We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erin Dill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erin below.
Erin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
The experience which completely shifted my perspective while working a 9-5 that motivated me to work as a full time entrepreneur.
Before I was an esthetician, I owned a clothing store. While owning the clothing store I continued to work a 9-5. Scared to quit my job to completely focus on the store, my business failed. While closing my clothing store I realized I needed time off (one day) during the week to get things in order. I sent in the request to my job, the request was denied and they demanded that I be at work on the requested date. I ended up going to work that day but I never forgot that feeling. The emotions of the situation were wild. First, my heart was broken because I had to close my store. Next, the time that I needed to do so was being denied. Lastly, I’m a grown ass woman asking another grown woman for permission to take care of a personal matter in my life and they told me no! I never wanted feel this way or be placed in another situation like this again.
After that situation my main focus was to “hustle my way out of my 9-5”. I sold clothes, I sold flowers, I hosted parties… whatever idea I got I tried. Eventually I got the idea to learn to do lashes, eventually I found out that legally in California you had to be a licensed esthetician. Long story short, I ended up enrolling in esthetician school, quitting my job and I never looked back.
Erin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Erin of Metilda’s Corner, an all natural, plant based esthetician. I fell into the beauty industry by accident but I absolutely love it here! I was trying to figure a way out of my 9-5 because I just knew God had more for me. I ended up enrolling in esthetician school and falling in love with giving facials.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the many times I’ve had to pivot was immediately after esthetician school. I had about three days remaining then everything was shut down due to COVID. Once everything was shut down I could no longer practice facials for months. I had to figure something out. I knew the world would open up at some point, I also knew everyone was at home on social media all day. So my idea was “focus on two things, going live daily giving myself facials like it was my job (because it was) and focus on formulating and selling my products”. Once the world started opening up everyone wanted a facial… it worked! I was also able to sell my products online which helped bring in extra money because at that point my savings was running low.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
In my mind, “cash is king”! I operate off of the word of God saying that I “…will lend and not borrow”. My business, by Gods grace has been completely paid for in cash and is debt free. Starting my business I had a nice amount of money saved and I build off of that.
