We were lucky to catch up with Erin Dembo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
All the way when I was about eight years old, is when I knew I wanted to become a writer. I wrote my first ever poem called ‘Why am I shy?’ on my mini Dell computer and printed it on notebook paper. I have always been crafty, thanks to my grandmother for taking me to Michael’s every Saturday morning. Then when it came to college, a lot of my family were saying I needed to pick a “true career” and not English/writing. So, being pressured I did Pre-Vet for a good semester or two and changed my major to English: creative writing concentration with a minor in Journalism. I felt I needed to do what God blessed me with and I am able to express myself more, inspiring others.
Erin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into poetry by already doing well in English classes and teachers seeing it in me, so early high school I started to pivot into the creative world.
I think I’m the realest at my craft because I was created by God and he’s perfect in his image, so I create from a genuine heart and experiences. I truly want people to know that I am human just like them and I enjoy showing others that my work comes from a real place of true growth.
I have file cabinets in my head, I spark from inspiration sometimes, although if I have a vision it’s playing throughout my head. Very imaginative and very big on collaboration/support with others in the field.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think just mere support, being a listening ear because sometimes we feel unwanted or unheard. Then just sharing to people you know, spreading light to a person’s craft is always positive. If you want to comment, please do so in a loving way–it shows the artists that they are making an impact.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I just constantly started posting whatever I felt, mainly reels and collaborating with my main account to spread awareness of my craft. If no one knows, you make them know. Plus, don’t think about trends or matching others’ aesthetics because it’s about you, and you won’t be perfect at it when you start.
This is why I started to develop healthy consistency, especially just being present throughout my stories and whatever else.
Another thing is to find creators that are on the same wavelength as you to pull inspiration from. Don’t be afraid to message people, we’re all trying to figure this thing out together.
