We were lucky to catch up with Erin Christensen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve been baking my whole life, but I first decided to really focus on my cake decorating skills when my husband and I began having our children. We have three daughters, and I wanted to be able to make their birthday cakes myself and ensure that all of them were completely unique and special. When our oldest daughter turned 2, Winnie the Pooh was her whole life. I wanted to create a huge 3-tier cake with all her favorite characters, a honey tree with a beehive, Eeyore’s house made of sticks, some honey dripping, and other iconic concepts from the stories and movies. After watching and reading many tutorials, I realized that not only was I capable of learning and making something like this myself in my own home, but that I absolutely loved doing this!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began primarily making children’s birthday cakes as well as other celebration cakes and cupcakes. Customers would reach out through my website to let me know any themes, colors, or concepts they wished their cake and/or cupcakes to incorporate, and I would work with them to create their unique dessert. I like to ensure that each of my cakes and cupcakes are one-of-a-kind, and I develop all of my own recipes as well. I have since focused my business also on creating cake and cupcake baking and decorating content in the form of videos, tutorials, and written recipes, which can be found on my website, YouTube channel, and my other social channels. I strive to cover as many aspects of baking and decorating that I possibly can, as I love attempting new challenges, developing new techniques, and sharing what I have learned and discovered with others.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel the best thing society can do to support creatives is to watch their videos and follow their content if they find it interesting and exciting. I truly can’t express enough how grateful I am when I hear from someone on social media that they found a video or recipe of mine helpful to them.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is being able to share all the fun I have: whether this is sharing a new technique I’ve developed with my audience online, physically sharing in a piece of my cake with my family, or seeing my customers so excited about their special cake. I absolutely love being able to provide this to people.
