We were lucky to catch up with Erin Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I love being an artist. I do wonder what having a “normal” job would be like sometimes. The security and routine of a “normal” job sounds nice, but I love being my own boss and connecting with clients on a more intimate level. I do not see myself sitting in a chair all day.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into hair and makeup because my best friend pushed me! I was in college when she decided to leave college and be a wardrobe stylist. She encouraged me to follow my passion in hair and makeup so that we could be “the dream team.” I knew I always wanted to be of service to others, to help and give back in some way. This is how I am doing it, how I am connecting with other humans. I offer hair and makeup services to everyone of all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life. I am an on location, freelance artist and I intend on keeping it this way for the time being. I do everything from commercial to runway, weddings, and all of the in between. I am not sure that my skill is what sets me apart from others, but more so my ability to connect and personalize my services with my clients. It is an intimate service and feeling comfortable with and seen by your stylist is important. I really love to go above and beyond for my clients and I do that by pushing them to try new things that still suit them.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is what I said before- connecting with people. I love making people feel and look their most beautiful and authentic selves. However that may be! Human connection is wildly important to my creative process.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a freelance artist, there have been so many times that I did not get the job or that I have felt stuck and uninspired. You definitely have to hustle and remember that your only competition is yourself. It is very difficult to remember that and not compare yourself. Especially in the world of social media.
