We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erin Aasland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erin below.
Erin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
I’ve been seeing a lot of smaller Wedding Parties, or even just one person per side. And also having the Wedding Party sit during the ceremony, which I kinda love as it gives them the ability to relax and enjoy the ceremony with a better view. Then when grabbing photos of them, they are actually more engaged, vs. when standing up front the whole time. Sometimes the angle of the Wedding Party is so tight that they really cannot see the couple, which makes it hard for them find something to focus on and stay engaged in the moment.
Another thing I love seeing is not having a Bouquet Toss. Instead couples are gifting the bouquet to a mom, or to a family member who just lost a significant other. It is absolutely way more meaningful and such a sweet gesture to honor someone special. The stories that are told during this presentation usually do not leave a dry eye in sight!
Also, Private Vows have kinda been a big thing recently. Couples are choosing to read more personal and intimate vows right after their First Look. This is actually something quite special for the couple to have alone together, and gives them more time to really be present with each other and feel all the emotions of those Private Vows. I love grabbing a few shots from a far, to give the couple space and to help create some beautiful storytelling shots.
Erin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey, my name is Erin Aasland! I am a wedding and portrait photographer from Snoqualmie, Washington, and have been capturing all things love and life in the PNW since 2010.
Through a documentary yet romantic shooting style, my focus is on capturing candid, in-the-heart moments and genuine interactions with loved ones. I have an eye for detail and finding beauty in the unscripted, allowing me to create images that reflect the unique story and essence of each couple. I find that my light-hearted personality helps people quickly relax and have fun just being themselves in front of the camera, which is so important to me. My goal is to tell stories with intention, quality, and care so couples can have beautiful images that feel like them.
When I’m not shooting weddings, you can find me capturing lifestyle portraiture out of my natural light studio, which is my happy place. I love shooting maternity and newborns session in-studio because it’s such a fresh space for new parents to come too and the natural light there is just gorgeous, even during the winter months.
Photography has always been a passion of mine, ever since I was little, but it never seemed like something I could do as a career. And it wasn’t until after the birth of my twins that I realized I needed a change, and to find a job that truly filled me with joy. From there I picked up my camera again and didn’t look back. My family is my rock, I couldn’t ask for any better. And their unwavering support fuels my passion to pursue a path that celebrates love, life, and the little moments that truly matter.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Honestly, there are two things that come to mind as being the most rewarding thing…
One would be, sending off a gallery to a client and immediately hearing back regarding how much they love their images. I want you to love your images as much as I do!! So, when I hear just how well I was able to capture a day with so much emotion and love… right there, I’m toast – that is just the best feeling as a creative.
And second, I would have to say is being able to continue documenting the lives of my wedding couples well after their wedding day. When a couple asks me to help capture their next life milestone, it means more to me than I can express. It is so rewarding being a part of their life as it continues to flourish and grow.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Photography for me is deeply rooted. Photographs hold a very dear and emotional place in my heart. They allow you to easily reminisce about places we’ve been and people we’ve loved.
My ancestors made their way here from Denmark, and when I was little I would sit with my mom and our vintage green tin that held what seemed like an endless amount of photographs, letters, and mementos from their lives. Looking through all this would open a whole world of wonder for me and I immediately felt connected to their lives. And it makes me sad to think that without these photographs, I would not have such beautifully visual memories to connect with and to pass down. Thus, I am a big believer of printing and displaying photographs to help hold a visual depth to our memories.
These feelings fuel my passion to provide people with photographs showcasing their connections and the important moments of their lives. So they too can connect deeply, remember the emotions, and breathe life into their memories to pass on to younger generations. Our stories, these photographs, become cherished family heirlooms,
