Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erika Timko. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Erika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?

I guess I like to think that everything happens when it’s supposed to happen.

For years I had been scribbling down random thoughts, one liners, and silly jokes, in hopes that maybe someday I might actually do something with them. Then in May of 2016 I started making videos for my comedic, puppet forward YouTube channel, Beaucoup Askew TV where I started incorporating all of the characters, parody songs, and storylines that I had concocted from over the years into my videos. Maybe had I jumped right into filmmaking from the start, I wouldn’t have had all these ideas bouncing around and perhaps burned out too quickly. Who’s to say, right? I will say that I’m happy that I started when I did.

Erika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Sure thing! I am an artist, musician, and DIY filmmaker. I’m currently focusing most of my energy on my puppet forward YouTube channel, Beaucoup Askew TV, where I write, perform, and edit my webseries, Fashion Trashin, amongst other video shorts.

I’ve been into art since I was a young kid, and art was without a doubt my favorite subject in school. I always found myself doodling or coloring something! I got into music at a pretty young age too, I started playing saxophone around age 9, and that led me to start playing guitar at 12, and bass at 14. However, my filmmaking pursuits didn’t start until I was in my 30’s, although I had dabbled in some home video making here and there in my 20’s.

I got into filmmaking because I felt like I had some silly stories to tell and hoped that folks might get a laugh out of it.

My infatuation with puppets started back when I was a kid in the 80’s watching wacky shows like Pee Wee’s Playhouse and The Muppet Show. I was always into art and music, making kooky cartoons, and playing in bands.

Flash to 2016, when I started my YouTube channel, Beaucoup Askew TV and my main show Fashion Trashin, in which I write, perform, and edit all of the shows, along with a slew of special guest voice overs from creatives who have inspired me to do what I do. It’s a very rewarding feeling to collaborate with folks who you’ve looked up to over the years. Plus, it’s a great outlet to be uber creative, making a cozy psychedelic parallel universe that is Beaucoup Askew TV!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

I would say the freedom to create whatever the heck you want! It’s a real joy for me to conjure up these characters and scenarios for Beaucoup Askew TV and Fashion Trashin, all being set in a parallel universe which doesn’t have to adhere to reality.

Plus, I feel very fortunate as I have had the pleasure of having so many cool, creative people be so kind as to lend their voice over talents to my projects and I’m eternally grateful to be able to collaborate with such awesome folks. It’s wild because I have had special guests on Fashion Trashin that had influenced me to get into music and art when I was growing up, so it’s pretty neat to witness things going full circle. It is really rewarding to be able to work together with such talented people who have essential led me on my current path.

Regarding my art, I recently had my first solo art show in July, which was a blast! It was really cool to see all of my paintings I’ve created hanging on the same wall together. Plus, in November I will have some of my artwork and videos featured in an upcoming art show from the Cartoonism Collective which is also very exciting!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

I’ve been doing Beaucoup Askew TV now for a little over 6 years and it hasn’t quite set the world on fire just yet, and I’m sure that would frustrate some folks to the point of wanting to abandon ship. However, I absolutley love curating each and every video from the writing process, to filming, editing, and all the minutiae that go into every episode. I think you just have to love what you do. I certainly do! It’s definitely not a get rich quick scheme by any means, but it is super fulfilling.
