We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erika Schuster . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erika below.
Erika, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the biggest trends in the cake and bakery world are the vintage cakes and I am here for it! I absolutely love vintage and dainty things and these cakes are the embodiment of that! They are also each very different. This is probably my favorite thing to create in the bakery right now so my customers almost always get a yes from me even when I say I’m booked. Lol
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into cake decorating about 15 years ago. My sister was having an all white birthday party and I really wanted to make the cake. (Previously had no experience, I just like to bake). I went to the local party store and bought everything I could find to create a cake for her. It came out great, or so I thought. I got so many compliments, I thought, “Hey! I should keep doing this!” That eventually lead me to getting a position in a local bakery as a cake decorator, then to running that bakery, and now having my own shop!
I specialize in custom cakes and LOVE to help my customers bring thier vision to life. The excitement in thier reactions when they pick up thier cakes is honestly EVERYTHING. It makes my whole day everytime!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I honestly think that the quality of my work, in combination with the way I treat my customers is what built my reputation. There are so many people out here who run business and just treat their clients anyway kind of way. I strive not only to do my best work for my clients, but to do so with integrity and a good attitude.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have had MANY pivots within my business. I opened my first bakery location in 2015 and it was only open for 1 year. I leaner so ma y lessons as a business owner this year. I closed it because I wanted to be home with my children and ot just wasn’t working out. Spent the next 6 years as a work from home mom, baking and creating! Then I opened my current shop in April of 2021. I am hoping yo grow and expand from here!
