Erika, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?

In the winter of 2021, I took a leap of faith and opened my first spiritual practice in Austin, Texas. Back then, I had little experience with marketing or running a business—my drive came purely from a deep desire to help others connect with and understand the spiritual realm. To this day, I’ve never invested in formal marketing; my clients find me through word-of-mouth recommendations and positive Google reviews.

My very first client came as a total surprise—an old friend from elementary school in my home country of Colombia. It all started when I posted on social media about my brand-new practice and how spirituality had profoundly transformed my own life. She reached out almost immediately—no sales pitch required. Her opening words still resonate with me: she called me a person of integrity, noting that she’d been following my journey on social media and had witnessed my personal growth firsthand. “I trust you,” she said, “and I want you to guide me in overcoming what’s holding me back from living a more aligned life.”

That initial session marked the beginning of something magical—not just for her, but for me as a practitioner. It reminded me that authenticity and genuine transformation speak louder than any advertisement ever could.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is that family doesn’t always have your best interests at heart. This realization has been the most transformative in my life, reshaping my relationships and sense of self in profound ways.

Growing up, I bought into the cultural myth that blood ties mean unconditional support and love—no matter what. But over time, I saw the cracks: family members who drained my energy, judged me harshly, and even harbored envy that made it impossible to be my authentic self around them. Their presence felt debilitating, like a constant weight holding me back from growth. It wasn’t until I hit a breaking point—exhausted from the transactional dynamics and emotional toll—that I decided enough was enough.

I made the tough choice to distance myself completely from those family members and set firm boundaries with others. It wasn’t easy; it felt like betraying a core part of my identity. But I came to understand that my energy and presence are precious gifts, deserving of connections that uplift rather than undermine. Surrounding myself with people who could truly see me, hold space without judgment, and offer real, authentic love has been life-changing.

Now, my world is filled with soul-deep connections where love flows freely—not as a transaction, but as something genuine and deeply felt. Unlearning that family is an obligation freed me to embrace my sovereignty and choose relationships that truly nourish my spirit.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

My reputation in the spiritual market stems from being authentically myself—real, no-nonsense, and unflinchingly honest with impeccable integrity. Clients feel that genuineness, which builds trust, keeps them coming back, and inspires them to recommend me to their loved ones. Word-of-mouth has been everything.
