We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erika Resnick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erika below.
Erika, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have any key partners or vendors – if so, how’d you find them and start working with them?
In this industry, communication is invaluable. When I am looking for key partners, I always emphasize the importance of open dialogue and quick, reliable responses. I seek out people who embody honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic. While each of us operates independently, any recommendation I make reflects directly on me, so I ensure that I align myself with individuals who are not only highly skilled in their trade, but who also carry themselves professionally. One of my tile installers is someone I met on a job site. We clicked instantly and eight years later, we’re still working together. Another partner of mine started out by doing some work for his wife’s massage studio. I happened to complement the space one day and not long after he left his full-time job, in a completely different industry, to pursue his passion, now he works with me and runs his own business doing what he loves. Honesty is critical, not just among ourselves, but with our clients. That level of transparency and integrity is what I believe sets me apart, and has contributed to my success in this field.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my career, painting kitchen cabinets, and while working in clients homes, I naturally started offering suggestions on how they could elevate their spaces. After two years of painting, I transitioned into decorating and things just grew from there. Today, some clients hire me solely for paint consultations, while others bring me in for full renovations or additions. No project is too big or too small; each one matters deeply because it matters to my clients. What I am most proud of is building this career from the ground up. After being a stay at home mom for 20 years, I now get to do two of the things that bring me the most joy – raising a family and creating beautiful, functional spaces for others. What sets me apart in this industry is my fair pricing, the strong personal relationships I build with each client and the way I pass along the discounts I receive, directly to them. I take the time to truly understand my clients styles, which helps me design spaces that feel authentic, thoughtful and uniquely theirs.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
My first project was a primary bedroom and bathroom renovation. The client had approved a bathtub I presented to her, based on a photo and while she was away for the summer, I sourced it. The original option came with a steep price tag, and I didn’t feel comfortable moving forward with that cost, so I found a similar style for half the price. Unfortunately, once it was installed, it was clear the tub lacked the quality and substance the space called for. I ended up returning it and absorbing the $800 restocking fee. It was a tough but valuable lesson: every client has their own budget, and my job is to respect it – without compromising on quality .

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my clients reactions when a project is complete. Even something as simple as a fresh coat of paint can completely transform a space – and witnessing that moment of joy never gets old. I’m deeply passionate about what I do and there’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing I’ve helped bring happiness to someone through a space they truly love.
